Quinnipiac University Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Katelyn

Intramurals are probably one of the most popular organizations on campus. Every sport has a d1 and d2 division and it gets pretty competitive. Student Programming Board usually has an activity every weekend night, but your best bet is making the fun yourself.

I have three groups of friends that I hang out with at Quinnipiac. The first is a group of girls who lived on my floor freshman year. The second is a group of friends I have met through classes in my major, and the third group is people I have met through my work study job. No one really goes home on the weekends, most people stay on campus or go to New Haven. There are university sponsored events every weekend, usually going from 8pm-1am, open for all students, free of cost. If students want to party, they can easily find a place to do so, yet there are also a lot of students who don't like to party, so finding alternative activities on the weekends is easy as well.

At orientation, you have to be outgoing and meet friends-- this is where most people meet their best friends. Orientation is like no other experience you will have in your life. Not many people date, but a lot of people do I guess-- there are a lot more girls than guys but its not a big or noticeable deal. Greek life is not huge, they don't have a house-- it seems kind of like a cult for people who have to buy their friends-- I would recommend it at a big school however. Each weekend, a group of my girl and guy friends go to New Haven on both Thursday and Saturday and party here in rooms on Friday. I would say the majority does the same. 2am on a Tuesday.. Homework or just talking in Study Lounges, many people don't sleep here because they procrastinate until 2am to start studying and papers. It is really good to be involved with a club that has to do with your major (fundraising, meeting older people to guide you, cute sweatshirts haha, resume reasons) and others if you are interested/have time. If you are a health science major, chances are you won't though.

I am not in any groups, but I know that student government is a big group on campus. Students in dorms always leave their doors open, expect bigger dorms like Commons and Ledges. The hockey games and basketball games are the most popular. I feel like guest speakers are pretty popular, but theater is not that popular. I know people, like myself, who are in long relationships and then many who are single. But i do not know much about the dating scene because i do have a boyfriend. My closest friend lives across the hall from me and i met her because of that. I am also close to her friends, who i met thru her. Watching TV, i really don't have a lot of homework. May weekend was a tradition that happened every year, but i was cancelled for this year (2008). Spirit week either just started this year or has been around for a while. People party every weekend, and many times Thursdays. I do not think fraternities and sororities are very important on campus at all. Last weekend i went home, but otherwise it was "fake may weekend" and i would have been partying at least one day. On a Saturday night, the campus always has programs or movies to go and see. Off campus, i go shopping or sometimes out to dinner.

Intramural sports are very popular. There are different sports offered each season, including soccer, basketball, dodgeball, softball, or volleyball, as well as some others. Most people leave their doors open especially in the freshman housing and people will stop in if they see your door open. The hocksey games are QU's biggest sport and many people will go to these games, especially on the weekends. Because the arena is off campus, shuttles are provided for transportation there. There are a few fraternities and sororities that a bunch of ppl join, but joining is definitely not crucial to your social life. Thursday nights are popular for going into New Haven and going out to clubs. Shuttles are provided for free transportation there and run until about 3am on the weekends. On Friday and Saturday nights, you can always find a party somewhere on campus to go to. If you don't want to drink, there is also a club called QU After Dark (QUAD). This organization provides events all weekend from 10 pm - 2 am for people who want to get away from the drinking scene.

Thursday and Saturday nights are the main nights students take the shuttles into NewHaven. Friday nights are spent on campus in the dorms. Frats and Sororities are more social clubs, they don't have houses. I wish more people left their doors open, there are still people on the other side of the hallway that I have never met.

Quinnipiac has much to offer when it comes to activies. These activites range anywhere from athletics to drive in movies on campus to nights in new haven.

My favorite acitivity is Phi Sigma Sigma, my sorority. It has been a way in which I have been involved in both the community as a whole and more around campus. It broadended my horizons and I have made quite a few new friends.

There are a lot of clubs and organizations you can get involved in here. I, personally, helped out back stage at the last theater production, and I plan on doing it again. There are also a fair number of club sports to participate in. My closest friends that I have here include my roommates, some girls from next door, and some girls from farther down the hall. So I've basically met them through living in the dorm. Most people I know get along really well with at least one of their roommates, if not all of them. There are a lot of parties that go on on the weekends, but if you're not looking to drink there are always activities on campus geared specifically toward people who don't want to drink. The Greek life is pretty prevalent here; my roommate joined a sorority. But of course, you're totally fine with social events if you don't join a sorority or a fraternity. People go into Hamden and New Haven a lot to go to the movies, go out to eat, shop, go bowling. There is definitely stuff to do here.

Most popular teams are the hockey and basketball teams. Most studnets in dorms leave their doors because it helps to meet new people. Athletic events are fairly popular, especially when we are playing our rival schools. There are a great number of guest speakers throughout the year, which apply to almost every major. People party mostly on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Fraternities and Sororities are popular, but not that important. On a Saturday night, instead of drinking, one can eat dinner in New Haven, see a movie, or walk around town.
