Go to a place that not only the professors encourage acheivement, but also through the student life. A place that has unity (through means of competition in any form, etc.) and one which cares for your personal well-being; from curricular activities and extra-curricular. A place that encourages you to get involved anywhere on campus...

Try to find a college that shares your morals and has a good program in what you want to study. While in college, balance a social life with an academic life--you learn a lot from interacting with others both in and out of the classroom. Also, try to find one or two professors who will speak to you in an informal setting outside of the class room if possible. The can give you insights apart from the textbooks and class discussion.

Pray about it. Know what God wants in your life and what he wants for you. It is His will that is and should be the first focus in our lives.

The checklist I made when I first started to look at colleges had biggest, best, and popular on it in bold letters. I started to realize that these we're unrealistic ideas for me and for my financial status. To be honest, the college I chose is totally opposite of what I had imagined in my mind. Now, my checklist has changed and it goes something like this. 1.)Teachers- you spend hours and hours studying in the classroom and having a teacher who invests their time in you as well as encourages you makes your hardwork seem easy. 2.) Atmosphere- the minute you step on campus you should feel at home. Pick somewhere that reflects your lifestyle so it's easy to get involved and be exactly who you are. 3.) Opportunites- a state of the art facility is absolutely nothing unless it gives you the opportunity to look beyond the horizon and experience hands on what you are studying. 5.) Finances- don't let money make you or break you! Being a college student is hard to juggle books, cash, and fun all at the same time, so pick a place that won't totally drain your pocket.

Obtain a community college degree prior to a 4 year school if possible, it saves so much money. Find what you're interested in, and go for what you know you will want to do for years to come. Money is a tool, not your life. Be responsible with your time and keep your passion alive.

The advice that I would give a parent or student about selecting the right college would be to research colleges that offer degrees in the major of interest, visit as many campuses as possible, talk with students already enrolled, and ask God for guidance in the selection process. The only accurate way to assess a college or universtity is to ask existing students what makes their school special and separated from the rest. Research combined with consistent prayer and trust in God gaurantees clear knowledge and direction of which college to choose. To make the most of the college experience in the social aspect, I would advise the student to attend as many dorm activities as possible, live on-campus, and make an effort to initiate friendships. It's important to put high-school behind, and become the person that you want to be. Each day is a new day, and a fresh opportunity to be a light in this world. Academically, I would tell them to form study groups, visit their advisor often, always attend class, and expect hard work. Becoming a visionary is an essential part of developing a successful future, and achieving your life goals...dream big!
