Brigham Young University-Hawaii Top Questions

What should every freshman at Brigham Young University-Hawaii know before they start?

Christopher

What I have gotten out of my college experience is that there are many trials that one must go through as they are adjusting to the real world. From the comfort of home and having most if not all needs provided for oneself by parents, one can truly be able to learn how to fend for themselves and also have the experience of learning who can be trusted to help one out in times of need or how dependable oneself is to others who may require assistance. College is able to show this and more since one is in an environment where a person is able to grow and learn to be on their own with others in the same situation. it is why i believe college is a definite step forward to being able to be a productive member of society.

There are many reasons as to why it is important to attend college. When students experience a post secondary education, they have the opportunity to read books and listen to the lectures of top experts in their fields. This stimulation encourages students to think, ask questions, and explore new ideas, which allows for additional growth and development. One of the goals of BYU-Hawaii is to prepare men and women with the intercultural leadership skills necessary to promote world peace and to be a good influence in families, professions, and social affiliations. Although I am only a freshman, I feel that making the decision to attend a university as prestigious as BYU-H will help my future in becoming an example to others. I have had such a positive college experience so far; however, the road will not be easy, I know that at some point I will want to give up—but I know that when the whole experience is over and I receive my College Degree as a graduate of 2014, will be the most rewarding feeling.

Because of my having come to this university, I have had many opportunities to meet people that will potentially help me in my future and whom I will also have occasions to help as well. I have also been able to construct a strong foundation to build my career and my life upon. The teachers are not only experienced in their fields, they also keep up with what is currently happening in order to help us, the students, be ready for the real world as soon as we get there. This school has changed my life and I would not trade the experiences I have had at this school for anything.

My college experience will begin on September 15, 2010. I am very much looking forward to the cultural experience that I expect to receive at BYU Hawaii. It is a small campus of 2500 students but over seventy countries are represented. It means so much to me that part of their mission statement is to help students in their efforts to influence the establishment of peace internationally. I plan to study International Business. I hope to be prepared with the intercultural and leadership skills necessary to promote world peace and international brotherhood, to address world problems, and to be a righteous influence in families, professions, civic responsibilities and social affliations. Thanks so much for considering me for this scholarship.

Knowledge. What more could someone want from a school? With the power of knowledge, we can reach our fullest potential in our desired vocations. BYU-Hawaii has offered me not only an oustanding academic education, but also a cultrural and social education. Whatever field we decide to go into we must learn how to cooperate with people from different backrounds and cultures in order to survive. I know that what I have learned in my classrooms as well as in my social surroundings in Hawaii, I will use in my furture career and it will allow me to succeed in the way i was meant to.

BYU-Hawaii has been valuable to me in that it has allowed me to gain different perspectives on life through interacting with different people from around the world. These places include Ghana, Mexico, Chile, Tonga, Samoa and Korea just to name a few. It has given me the opportunity to think freely for myself and to do so with a much more open mind with the additional perspectives offered by those from places I knew very little about before I came to BYU-Hawaii.

I have gotten so many positive experiences out of my college experience. There are unlimited amounts of valuable lessons I have learned by attending college. Some of these include being able to learn responsibility on a much higher and more academically focused level. I have matured greatly and in all the right areas. I understand now the importance of learning, and the even bigger importance of gaining a strong and respectable education. I have been able to achieve a very lot academically, but also socially and mentally. A college experience doesn't compare to anything else. It is amazing what it does for a person's life if they simply apply themselves, engaging in campus activities and strive to learn and expand their knowledge through classes taken and through self learning.

I haven't attended BYUH yet, but I am really looking forward to the wide variety of different cultures of people and being able to have the ability to broaden my knowledge. I feel it a real priviledge to attend and am very grateful for all the help that has been extended to me.

I have learned that there is so much to learn and that we cannot learn everything but we can learn something one at a time. As a college student, I find out that each subject that I took needs a thorough study and I do not understand all of them. That is why each is given the option to focus on a major. Though I wanted to be a doctor, I ended taking a different major since I find out that being a doctor is not really what I wanted to be. My ability takes me to a different path and that is to work on computers and do business. Currently, I am taking two majors and I am proud to say that after being in school for almost four years I am ready to face the bigger world outside. The knowledge that I have acquired in my studies have helped me prepare for the challenges that I know I have to face after school is over.
