The campus is beautiful. Classes are hard but good and professors are available for help. This is a party school. More than my sibling's big state school. Partying is everywhere, all weekend, even with Covid happening. The college keeps it quiet so it was surprising to me how much partying happens. Weekends can be lonely if that's not your thing.

Washington College is a vibrant and tight-knit community. We're uniquely situated so that we can experience the uniqueness that small-town eastern shore life has to offer like locally owned businesses and a farmers market every Saturday but we're also a few hours drive from some of the largest cities on the East Coast which is great for internships and externships.

Gary - 02/17/2020

The school is full of rich kids who aren’t that bright but with daddy’s money they are allowed in. Nothing to do outside of class but sleep, drink, and don’t forget the tradition of mass public nudity streaking in the lawn at the end of the semester. Not great job or internship prospects. The school is grossly overpriced and nobody really knows where your money is going. I wouldn’t be surprised if some kind of fraud case came out in the future. You are better off going elsewhere.

Shalis - 12/28/2019

I am an African American Freshman female at Washington College. I personally love it here, though they're a few downsides. The area, Chestertown, is predominantly white. Black students have experienced some racial injustice from people outside of campus. Our school is pursuing charges and is really trying to change the view the college has. The area is also a little expensive, but every Saturday there is a farmers market and I absolutely adore it. There is also a Potter Fest they do every year and it is super fun. There are other festivals as well. Washington College is an extremely old school (one of the oldest in America) and was built by slaves. We had a couple of racist paintings taken down this year. The school is really trying to show that it cares for the minorities here. We do have a lot of foreign exchange students and they are all amazing. The school has many students with a variety of political opinions so there are always interesting discussions happening. I gave a lower rating on food because I am vegetarian. There's a lot of limit on what I can eat on campus but generally, I find it pretty good. We have a salad bar, an omelet bar, sometimes a pasta bar, a sandwich bar, etc. The school has limited wheelchair access too so if you have a disability it is extremely hard to get around. Luckily professors and students are addressing it and there may be changes to come. In relation to money, depending on your income you may qualify as a federal work-study student. That is what I am. This means that you can get an on-campus job and get some money from your tuition refunded, for example you can get 1,000-2,000+ dollars refunded back if you work a lot of hours. I am a lab assistant and it is helpful for what career I want to pursue. The school has amazing opportunities for connections and work experience. I am a freshman though so a lot of these ratings may change, this is just my initial review. I definitely do not regret coming here. I am very excited for what is to come.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If i could go back and give myself advice as a high schooler, I would begin by saying that college is definetely an opportunity that can not be missed out on. I would tell myself to work harder in high school to prepare myself for the work load that is given in college. I would also tell my high school self that it helps to take college seriously. It is important to have fun while in college, but it is more important to do well especially since money is being put towards the college education. I would also tell myself that I need to find a way to balance working a job and school work because it is tough but important to stay ahead. Although one cannot go back in time to tell their past selves things that they want to know, I am fortunate to know the things that I do know now.

Driving back to WAC after break is coming Home. My family is my community, is my professors, is my friends and peers. Walking across campus, there is never an unfamiliar face, never a lack of "hello". This land is beautiful not for the riverside or the great veridian fields (though they are lovely too) but because everywhere I look I can find a smile lighting my path. That is Home to me, that is where I wish to be.

  8. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I would have known a little more about the emphasis on english related classes. Now I realized that this was a liberal arts college when i applied, but I wish that it was not so strongly recommended that students take an english class each year. I currently am majoring in biology and chemistry and would have liked to deal a little less with language and literature,

  14. What is your overall opinion of this school?

The best thing about this school is that the faculty actually cares about its students, we are not just a number in a crowd. The school is small, but not too small. You get to know new people, and still find new connections on a daily basis. It is perfect to get around to different buildings without a hassle and the school spirit is great. People's reaction to this school is usually a positive one, and they like to visit because of the great view of the Chester River. The most complaints is that the school is in a very small quaint town, so there are not that many restaurants or activities within the city.

  15. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Yes and no. The most accurate description I have heard of the student body is that there are two distinct groups, and that would be the Athletic/Greek Life people and the English/Drama squads. That is not to say that there is little diversity on campus. Ridiculous. . I believe in the past few years, Washington College has made tremendous strides to diversify the campus. Students here come from all sorts of backgrounds. We have a huge amount of international students here. Students of various racial and financial backgrounds. There is a little bit of everything for everyone. We have Greek life, Intramural Sports, Student Government Association, service clubs, artistic clubs, and even an Anime club. Don't even get me started about the honor societies (yes, we got Phi Beta Kappa.) In conclusion, Washington College is a small campus, but we got diversity squared away. It's not just rich students in Vineyard Vines pastels out to party away. People are down-to-earth. Students are here to make the most of their time, in and out of the class room. Don't underestimate Goose Nation.

  16. What are the academics like at your school?

My favorite class is intro to sociology. It really relates to things going on in our own personal lives and the bigger world around us, putting issues into perspective and makes you really think about the future. Class participation is very common, and usually a decent portion of students' grades. It is important to participate to really understand the topic you are learning. My major is English, and Washington's English Department is excellent. We have the school newspaper, the writing center, a literary and press house, and hands on professors that encourage you. Professors make an effort to spend time outside of class whether it be for academic help, future career advice, or just a casual conversation.

  17. What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Because of the school's private institution status and rural Eastern Shore setting, people have the idea that the students who go here are preps. They come from high-end families where Mommy and Daddy pay for everything, including that dope SUV sitting in the dorm parking lot. The students dress in Vineyard Vines and Uggs and usually participate in a sport, like lacrosse or baseball. There is little diversity on campus. A majority study hard but party equally on the weekends. There appear to be two distinct student groups on campus: Athletic/Greek life people and the English/Drama people. All students, however, have a riveting passion for GOOSE NATION. For further reading, please see Urban Dictionary's definition of "Washington College."
