When I was younger I took college for granted and assumed it was a right that I was entitled to, so I really didn't take it very seriously, so I walked away thinking I could do better without it.
Over the years, I worked and traveled and as I got out into the world, I realized very quickly how my life was going to pan out without having a degree. I saw my college educated friends get good jobs and buy houses and they were all ahead of where I was at, and I realized that I was stagnating and that things were never going to get truly better. I didn't want to get stuck and have to settle for less just to pay the bills, I needed a degree.
At 29, I returned to college. At 30, I got my first 4.0, and today I sit here enjoying the opportunity to attend college and to finally be able to really envision a better future for myself. This is my time to show myself and the world that I really can do anything I put my mind to.

I have developed a great base of family and friends from the Bowie Community.

It has been very valuable to attend college because I have learned that college is not a place to just have fun and play around , it is a place where you have to work hard to accomplish your goals. While attending college I also became aware that there are many resources available for students as myself that can help me towards my career. As being the first one in my family to attend college it has been a whole new experience where I have learned many things that I want to set a good example for my family that if I can go to college and graduate so could they. It also has been very valuable because I now know what to expect and how to overcome obstacles during my studies. By attending college I feel that I have another step forward into reaching my career.

College, in my opinion is far greater than higher education. College is a learning experience in all aspects of life. For years I was taught, go to college, get an education, and get a good paying job. Not once did I think to attend college to grow as a person, and learn about life itself!
Everyday as I walk the grounds of Bowie State University, I absorb the knowledge being presented to me. Every single day I learn something new. Whether I learn something pertaining to one specific school subject, or I learn something about life through conversation with a professor or a peer; I always learn something. There is something about its environment that encourages people to learn. It encourages people to learn themselves on a more intimate level, thus finding the person they truly are.
For years, I would always moan and complain every time someone preached to me the importnace of education. Now that I am older, and might I add a lot wiser, I now tell people not only is a higher education important, its the college experience itself that teaches you the most in life!

In my college experience I have realized that it is better to pay extra in tuition to get more academic experience and help in internships and mentorships. I didn't experience any mentorship in my college and felt I got a lot of 'run-around' in order to get any help I needed. This experience has left me with limited resources, yet I am eager to purse a graduate degree and make an impact in public health whether it be national or international. From here, I can know now what I did not know then; the importance on research work, internship, and mentorship. Though I was a member of BioMed Club and Secretary of Phi Sigma Gamma Lambda Chapter Biology society, (2009 ), I felt the involvements in our community was limited with limited resources. Upon graduate school, I plan to make a bigger impact in student involvement where I can make a difference in implementing and promoting public health with programs to tailor a specific need on getting a career worth rewarding. I plan on going to University of Maryland which provides all of this and more with a plethora of internship, research, and mentorship programs.

I am a non-traditional student; so my experience as a college student has been unique, but rewarding. I have improved, not only as a student, but as an individual. During my time at Bowie State University ;I have learned alot about MY HISTORY, and come to realize my potential. I now see myself as a leader in a company, and not just an employee. Through hard work and determination I have maintained a 3.0 GPA and was inducted into the National Honour Society. These achievements have been made possible because of the support and love of faculty, staff and peers. Bowie State is one of the oldest historically black colleges and universities in the state of Maryland and I am proud to stand behind an institution that values: Excellence, Civility, Integrity, Diversity and Accountability.

Out of my college experience I have learned a somewhat great deal of information in my major, which is psychology. I am a third year student and still have some courses to take so that I can fully learn all that I need to know about the psychology field. The most important thing that I have learned about is the importance of meeting deadlines at the exact time that they are due and no later because it could have serious consequences, if not. Many of my professors make it a priority to have us learn what it means to be responsible and independent. Many if those same professors have taught me that it is very important to manage your time wisely in order to accomplish your college and future career goals. It has been valuable to attend college, for me, because in my particular field, I definately need a degree to pursue counseling psychology and graduate school as well. Therefore, when I successfully complete my undergraduate studies I will be able to attend graduate school so that I can continue on to get my doctoral and master's degree. My education is the key to my success!

When I started College last fall, I was just estatic that I were the first out of my family to attend. Little did I know the outcome of effect that I would recieve from class instructions. During my course of study here at Bowie State University i've learned alot that my High School did not teach me. My high school was one of those that didnt have a high graduation rate, and low curriculum. When I enetered College I knew I didnt know much, but when I entered that first classroom, I knew my goals in life. Even though I may had to take those intermediate classes that I should have mastered in high school, I vowed to never give up. This experience of being around a diverse set of educated people and leaving that lower class neighborhood I never left before, I succeded my expectations. Yet in order to completely fulfill my goals and aspirations I have to continue my education and make sure i set that standard for my younger peers to look upon. I have gotten so much encouragement to succeed from college and I believe that it will be valuable in my future endeavors.

Having the opportunity to attend a four-year historically black university has been an amazing experience. I have been blessed to meet the most diverse group of people. The professors who have taught me have been nothing but exceptional. All with various experience in the subject of the classes taken. Being apart of the University Band program has given me the chance to be physically active and be involved and express my school spirit.
The value of this experience is not measurable. Each class has constantly taught me a different life lesson, and about myself. Those lessons have been overlapped from several professors which has only instilled it deeper. My education is going to take me where I want to go in life, so I would do everything all over again if I had the chance. In the three years I have been here at Bowie State I have just taken so much in and been able to develop my skills and acquire new ones.
