The moment I became a college student, my entire life changed . Previously, I took everything as a joke and I received grades that did not reflect my intellect/academic worth. When the time came for me to pick a college, I had a low GPA and very little acceptance letters. I vowed that if a good college accepted me, I would never slack or play around with my education ever again. One week later, I received my acceptance letter from Bowie State University. Since attending this institution of higher learning, I have evolved from the silly girl to the serious and ambitious woman that I am. It is hard to even fathom the fact that I have gone from a 1.7 GPA student to a 4.0 GPA student that is taking steps to join the Honors Program. I have learned more about myself in these 5 months of college than I ever knew in my previous 18 years. I am proud to say that I have flourished while being in college and even though I spent many sleepless hours studying and working , I can say that I do not regret one moment of it.

When I was a high school student, I always looked down upon community colleges, thinking they were only for unsuccessful people. In my first weeks of class at my community college, I had a negative viewpoint of what my "college experience" was going to be like due to the fact I was far from the school I wanted to be at. But as time went by, I slowly started to realize that community college wasn't that bad. In fact, it was great. With time, hard work, dedication, and focus, I really learned what it took to be a great student. Community college taught me the value of what hard work can bring and made me experience a taste of what a 4 year university can bring. With a lot of hard work and time spent on my studies, I earned a 3.59 GPA. I am also in the Honors Program which represents students taking honors courses while maintaining a 3.0 GPA and helps you achieve your goals in transferring. Instead of looking at community college as a negative part of my life, I now look at is a a stepping stone in the right direction to success.

I have received a different outlook on various cultures from a afican american perspective but also a substantial amount of ways to research and learn new information from peers and professors. This has made it valuable to attend in the form of being diverse in every way possible including, religious, cutlural, ethnic, etc. Although I believe I would have hit this mindset regardless, I think attending this university made me come to certain realizations much faster than any other university.

I have just started my college experience, but I have learned that I am in charge of how my experience goes. It has been difficult because I moved to a completely different state and I am a shy person. I really have to put myself out there in order to say I am enjoying college. It has been a challenge socially, but it is not the end of the world for me. I also learned to take my education seriously. I can not procrastinate because each semester goes by quickly. Going to college is important because I am making a better future for myself and I am growing into a mature adult during the process.

I originally had my heart and mind set on attending a traditional four-year university. Having had financial setbacks, attending community college was the only real educational option I had. I originally had no intentions of going to community college, because I felt my test scores were beyond that. But by being able to even attend college, I had learned to be humble and grateful for any beneficial opportunity you get, and to learn and be wiser from any mistakes you make. In one of my first classes, I had met many who were once in my position. Other students who had dreams of going to a fancy-private college but had to go to a community college for the time being, because of lack of financial aid or overwhelming debt from one year. It made me realize how I saved myself before it was too late. So, I feel what I have gotten out of my college experience, so far, is one of the most valuable life lessons anyone can learn: Do not let your pride get in the way and do not think something is below you, because often it is the best thing for you.

So far in my college experience, I've learned how to adapt to new things, how to meet deadlines, how to plan ahead, to work as a team, to schedule time for work and for fun, how to socialize more often, and how to utilize the resources around me. It's valuable to attend Bowie or any college because, the values and practices you learn stay with you through life. Going to any college is important in today's society because today, you need a degree to make a good living. Going to college will be one of the best chapters of your life because there you meet lifelong friends, you network, and learn about the craft you expect to make a living from.

There are a lot of things that I have gotten out of my college experience so far. The most important thing that I have gotten out of college is greatfulness. I never realized how fortunate I am to be able to go to school. There are so many poeple in this world who do not have the opportunities that I have in life. I am extremely fortunate and I know that I am one of the few lucky people put here on earth with this opportunity. It is extremely vauable to attend collge so that you can build a foundation to start your career. With education, you can do anything that you want in life. If someone wants to be a teacher, an astronaut, a business owner, they need to have education. It is something that you will have for life and it will take you places that people without education cannot go. I am so happy that I have the opportunity to attend school and I will not take advantage of it.

I'm from a small town in Massachusetts, so to say the least I havent been exposed to much of anything at all. So, when I got the oppurtunity to attend Bowie State University I knew it would open the door for a different environment for me. As my mother’s youngest child, I will be the first one of her children to complete a four year college. This experince has taught me never to take anyone or anything for granted I come from a low-income family so my money is always tight. I always feared if I shared anything I had it would be gone or damaged, only because I have so little items to share. Being here has taught me to share, give and take relationship. I know that when I walk across the stage in 2013 and recive me degree; I know it will be worth it. Its has been and honor to attend my University because of this economy I know I will be competing for jobs & it will be harder than ever. But I know I with pursuing a higher education I know I will have more career opportunities with a four year degree.

I am currently working extremely hard to be an excellent student in college so I will become an excellent high school teacher. I want more than anything in this world to continue my education. I have worked hard at life to so that I will make something more of myself than just a "half way" student/teacher. I pour my entire self into everything I do, making the end results that much sweeter. I expect nothing but greatness from myself and will not give up until I have reached my goals in college as well as in my life.
College has made me a strong independent woman and will continue to help me strive for a greater future in all that I do along the way. I am not finished with my education and I will still be learning much more as I grow as an individual. College has installed in me the importance of education, an understanding of my strengths and the will to live for more than what life can throw my way.

Bowie State University is the perfect fit for me, I have spent a number of years struggling to complete my undergraduate degree and BSU is enabling me to to that. My professors and department head, encourage and push me everyday to keep going, even at financially difficult times. The Universities mission statement is definately upheld;
"The education programs are designed to broaden the knowledge base and skill set of students across disciplines and enable students to think critically, value diversity, become effective leaders, function cometently in a highly technical world, and pursue advanced graduate study."
BSU is not a wealthy school, we survive on government grants and the love of our Alumni; the funds have to be distributed carefully. We are, however a school with such a strong bond that even the President of the United States saw fit to visit us twice and share in our passion for education and the pursuit for a better future.
At BSU I have gained an education inside and out of the classroom, I have gained a school spirit that will encourage me to give back when I graduate. I have learned to make the best of what little I have.
