What should every freshman at Baylor University know before they start?

My college experience has been great up to this point of my life as well as very valuable. I have met all type of people and I have shared my knowledge with theirs. I also have faced many challenges that almost make me fall, but with my eager for learning and the help of my college mates and professors I have been able to overcome all of them. I know that by focusing nothing will be able to defeat me. It has been also very valuable for me to attend college, because by educating myself, I will be able to provide a better future to my family, as well as I will be a better example for younger generations. Therefore, I will show other people that education is the best thing a person can have, because nobody will be able to steal it from you never.

From my college experience I have learned to be more responsible, independent, and have learned the value of hard work. Many of my friends stress out about their GPA and getting into med school, but I have learned that you cannot change the past, so don't stress about it! You can only try your best and hope that is enough, complaining won't change anything. I have learned so much and made so many great friends, it is easy to say that my educational experience is valuble to me!

One of the biggest things I've learned from my college experience is how much I don't know. College is truly a mind-opening experience. You are challenged to investigate why you believe what you believe, and you find that rather than destroying your belief, it can make it stronger and deeper than it was before. For the first time since kindergarten, you regullarly take naps. You find yourself in social situations that can either cause you to grow as a person or shrink back with immaturity. Your eyes are opened to the prejudices of others and most importantly, yourself. For a brief moment in time, you openly talk to strangers. Family and friends actually become a priority when you do go "home", because you now begin to appreciate the sanctity of a human life. You hear about the scope of some of the world's greatest problems, hunger, poverty, disease, war, oppression, and then you see it in your own backyard. But at the same time, you feel as if you have the power to do something about it. In short, college is where you learn to be, or not to be.

There is nothing better than the feeling of belonging to something and that's how I feel with Baylor. Relationships with people are the biggest deal to me, and the relationships that I have been able to accumulate with not only other students but with professors are irreplaceable.

College has been the most incredible time of my life. I have grown closer to my family, met life long friends, and cultivated an understanding of the world that is invaluable. I originally came to college to be a rich man. I was looking for success, expecting to get a degree and a great job. Everything I have since learned has shown me that there is more to life than money. From the people I have met and the things I have experienced, it is clear to me that no matter how much money I make I will always be just a very small part of the world. So as an architect, I want to be a part of building a world that I would be proud to pass onto future generations. I want to help create homes where children can grow up as a part of a loving family. I want to design hospitals that foster a sincere sense of care for patients. I want to build office buildings where workers do not have to spend the next twenty years stuck in fluorescent-lit cubicles. I know that without college, I would never have gained this knowledge and insight.

From my college experience, I have gained a greater understanding of the world, the people in it and the God who created the world. Through my Neuroscience, Psychology, Anthropology and Linguistics classes, I have learned how people think, feel and experience the world in different ways and how all of these conceptualizations of the universe have their roots in the same desire to love and to live. In addition to the knowledge gained, I have made lifelong friends whom I treasure and will remain connected with after graduation. Through classes, friends, and experiences I have grown as a person and matured.

At a time, this question ran through my head on a regular basis. On the verge of dropping out of college, I could not conjure up a reason to stay enrolled. Was it societal pressure that made college feel necessary? Was it for the future income? Superficial reasons that many abide by could not act as a proper justification to satisfy my once lackluster motivation. Upon my personal discovery and fondness of the science of Geography, I finally became aware of a motivation to stay, and better yet, strive for and succeed in getting straight A's. the number one reason I go to college is personal enrichment. I could care less about the future jobs to come, or how the big-wig campus snoots percieve me. I attend college to obtain knowledge and utilize it in my life. My education allows me to explore the world. College offers me an opportunity that is only available to a small percentage of the human race. I accept the challenge to better myself and therefore better the world through means of education.

Even though the time spent in college is short, the effects of attending are felt for the rest of a person's life. My college experience has enlightened me in so many ways; I feel like a candle being lit by a flame, burning brightly for the first time. College has shown me who I really am, my weaknesses, my strengths; it's like an omniscient mirror reflecting who I really am on the inside. I've learned a lot of practical information and information about life in general by attending my first year of college (such as the need for adept time management and problem solving skills). I also had a lot of fun by meeting new people and by trying new activities. It has been a blessing to attend Baylor University because of the tough challenges it provided; these challenges included taking rigorous classes, joining student organizations, and becoming a leader. There were a few times that I felt overwhelmed by the tasks facing me. Yet the challenges have all been worth it because I feel more empowered and prepared for life, which is the main reason why it has been valuable to attend Baylor.

I try not to take my college experience for granted. In order for me to stay up to date and educated with current events, I read the University Chronicle and Outlook Magazine and listen to KVSC radio to keep myself current and educated. I like to take optional courses that cause curiosity in me and are outside of my Finance major. I am going to join the Catholic Student Community in January. A major goal of mine is to make lasting friends and grow vastly while attending St. Cloud State University. I always look forward to watching SCSU Men’s Hockey and enrolling in group fitness classes, such as Yoga and Water Aerobics. To relieve homework stress, I like to listen, sing, and dance to the Twin Cities Hit Music Station often. I enjoy attending college level theatre and may someday be part of the SCSU Women’s Choir. College has been so valuable for me to attend because nowhere else in my life will I be around so many diverse people with such varied and comparable interests at the same time.

I’ve challenged myself to be more than a stereotype, and to surpass expectations. In this process I’ve learned that life is not as simple as I thought. Before going to Baylor I assumed that you chose a path to follow in life and stuck to it no matter what, but now after a few years of experience I know that life is what you make of it. Nothing comes easy, you have to work for what you want and in this process you are challenged to be better than you could have ever imagined. One of the friends I met at Baylor gave me the best advice, “life is a series of brick walls, you have to embrace them and find ways to surpass them in order to achieve your goals. Those who give up stay behind, but those who strive and work hard find ways around the wall, even if that means digging under it with a spoon.” Although it made me laugh at first it’s true, choosing to go to college is one of the best decisions I have ever made because it has made me realize that life is tough, but not impossible.
