My experience at Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) continuously fluctuated. A lot of changes happened while I was enrolled. The most notable being the change in the structure of their year-round academic calendar. A typical academic year is comprised of two 16-week-long semesters. At WCTC they decided to diverge from that system and implement 8-week terms. Each academic term at WCTC consists of five 8-week terms: 2 Fall Terms, 2 Spring Terms, and 1 Summer. At first, I was not too fond of the change it felt unnecessary because various courses had to be cut down which felt like I was being robbed of my education. However, after talking more with some of my professors and academic mentors, I learned to see it in a different, more optimistic, way. Firstly, the demographic at WCTC is mostly made up of non-traditional students, working students, and adults. The change made education more accessible to them by offering more scheduling options and less workload. Secondly, curriculums were cut down to be more efficient and this also allowed instructors to revisit their curriculums which is always a plus. By the time I graduated, I had learned to love the 8-week curriculum which was tough at times but worth it. One thing I resent, was the needless change in staff after Rich Barnhouse became the new WCTC President. He let go of multiple people who were mentors for students who are BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and lower-income. I will always regret not fighting for them more.

Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) is generally regarded as a reputable institution offering diverse technical and career-oriented programs. It provides hands-on learning opportunities, flexible scheduling options, and support services to help students succeed in their educational and career goals. The staff is ready to assist with any issues I might have with my schedule or financial aid questions.

Lilyann - 03/15/2022

It has nice class sizes and flexible hours to fit with your schedule outside of school. The classes are fast paced but you can always contact a teacher in a timely manner if you need help. Classrooms are grouped in buildings that are easy to find. You can find classrooms easily too as signs are posted on where places are to go along with building and room maps. In the main building there is are places to eat and study between classes.

Cheri - 07/28/2019

I absolutely love the teachers and their willingness to see me succeed in my personal goals! However, some of their online classes could be better including the use of more scholarly content and the knowledge of the instructor about how to use the host website. Nevertheless, in the classroom, I have found the teacher to be incredibly knowledgeable.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself that life won?t always turn out as planned, but everything happens for a reason. In high school I had a plan; four years of college, dream job, married by 24, and kids by 26. I found out quite quickly that life doesn?t always happen as planned. I?m about to be 25; I have a BA-Journalism & Mass Communication, no dream journalism job, no husband, and no kids. I?m back in school for my second degree and though it?s frustrating, I know things will turn out for the best in the end. I believe my first degree, coupled with my second degree will make me a stronger player in the workforce. I hope to land my dream job in the next couple years, and then will work on the marriage and family. It?s important to be a strong independent woman and not to depend on men for my happiness. These are things I wish I could have told myself when I was 18; it would have saved myself from a lot of stress and heartache.
