What are the academics like at University of New Hampshire-Main Campus?

Grace

I think that the academics at UNH are very good for a state school. I feel that they have certain programs that are very strong.

I find it very important for students to get to know their professors. Many students do not and they are loosing a huge asset that UNH is giving to us as students. When you get to know your professor you are able to understand the subject matter better. Therefore it your grade will benefit. Also by getting to know your professor you can get connections for the future, either it be writing a recommendations, using them as reference, or actually having them find you a job.

My major gives me many options. This was probably the most important criteria for me when I was selecting which school I would attend. The Environmental Conservation Studies major here requires that you take a plethora of general courses, ranging from economics to introductory zoology. With this broad knowledge-base, juniors then select a specialization, through which a preferred curriculum encourages them to pursue their specific academic and career interests. Personally, I am most interested in the public aspect of environmentalism, and so chose the specialization of management/policy/communication/education.

There are lots of big lecture halls where lots of students skip class and professors don't know anyone's names, but there are also smaller classes that are more intimate-depends if it's a gen. ed. or a major class. I'm a math ed major and a family studies minor.

Any type of class you can imagine is at UNH. There are big lecture style classes and also 10 person discussion group classes.

I don't appreciate spending so much money to come here, and getting put with teachers that I can't even understand because they have just came to America. I was in the business school, and I hated how its set up. Many of the professors are not personal, and don't care about concerns you have, particularly ADMN 403 computing essentials. That course is ran horribly!!! Students can be very competitive, but some never even attend class. I don't like how big many of the classes are, and teachers have a lot of trouble getting the attention from their students. The most interesting course I'm taking is costume construction. In COLA, the advisors are really great.

Some of my classes have 250 students and the professor would never notice if a student didnt show up the whole semester. But then again I have other classes where the teachers take attendance and realize when I am absent and know my name. I think that the students are competitive but you do not notice it as much as you did in highschool.

My favorite class I took was Modern U.S. History because I am very interested in history and I found the teacher's lectures to be enthralling. I also enjoyed the smaller study groups once a week because we were able to have more detailed conversations about what we were learning about. I think students in the nursing department study incredibly hard but I also notice that my friends in other majors will definitely work incredibly hard when it comes time to study for an exam or to write a paper.

Some of the freshmen classes are very large but as you get into higher level classes they get smaller and there is always a TA that can help. The library gets very full and is open really late which is helpful, around finals and midterms though it is hard to find a place to study. Depending on the major some students are very competitive but in some majors they really are not and dont seem to do much school work. I dont usually spend time with the professors out of class unless I have had a serious problem. My major and department are very competitive. The sciences and the business schools are very hard.

I think that UNH is academically challenging. I feel like the Gen -Eds however are too serious and need to be made easier. Students should be spending most of their time and effort in major classes and not Gen-Eds. However, I like the vast variety of classes that are offered.
