What are the academics like at University of New Hampshire-Main Campus?

Katrina

I feel as though the academics at the university varies depending on classes you are taking, major, and even teachers. I have had really easy professors along with extrememyl hard ones. Some definitely push you more while others do not. I like how some classes are lectures and others are small seminar classes ( more in the upper level classes) where people are able to choose what tehy would like to take. With the smaller classes it becomes more personal and you are able to build a small community within the classroom. In the smaller classes, Professors do know my name, but in larger lectures they do not. I feel like student study a great amount, especially those who are motivated. everyone I know is always at the library getting work done during the week, then on the weekends as well. I feel as though int eh smaller classes, participation definitely goes on a lot. There are always people who aprticipate more where others sit back and relax. I do think that students are competetive. I mean we do live in a country where people think of themselves first. I feel as though students are always trying to compete to put their delves before others. I am communication major and I do enjoy some of the classes that are offered why other I do not. I feel as though there needs to be more options offered with the courses each semester for I am usually disappointed and can not get into the class I want. One class in teh department I really enjoyed was Cinema in Society. We were able to learn about film and different aspects of it along with watching movies and being able to analyze these aspects. All the smaller classes, I am able to meet new friends and become close with teh Professor who is teaching it.

As you get succeed in your college career, academics become alot more serious, and you are addressed personally rather than an entire lecture class. I am a communication major, and I know that it is difficult to hire teachers, but the courses are very old fashioned. A Communication major today, should focus on modern technology and up to date on what is going on. The history part of communication is very uninteresting. The communication professors are helpful and great, but I feel that certain focuses within the Communication Department, for example, public relations, news, production etc.

Some professors know your name...it doens't always depend on class size, I have had small classes where the professor has their own agenda and doesn't take the time to know you or your name. Classes that are my favorite are ones that encourage class discussion and debate, it gets me thinking...nothing puts me to sleep more then a professor that reads straight off a power point. I do appreciate power points to help in taking the correct notes but it cant be the only aid. I study all the time, I can't speak for others. Must unique class Women's Studies intership... very open ended and allowed me to guide myself and make it what I wanted it to be, best thing I ever did. I love the women's studies department, everyone there is very helpful and wants to see all their students succeed. With the poli sci dept they're very stand offish, cold and everything you would steriotypically expect from a dept. I spend time with WS professors outside of class as I am involved with other activities on campus that they're leading or helping with research. I think the acedemic requirements are a little lax... the idea that you only need a 2.0 to graduate and then you're concidered as qualified as the person with a 4.0 (since most often empoylers don't ask about gpa's) is terrifying.

All of my businesses classes have been pretty good. I found a lot of my business classes were run the same way and most students did participate. I like my marketing classes the best because it was mostly projects and my teachers were more one on one.

UNH definitely has some very strong programs, but also has some more weak ones. I think WSBE (which i'm not in) is very geared towards getting a job, but otherwise you're focus is on learning about a topic with not much correlation to real life applications.

I have acquainted myself with every professor I've had this year and feel it provides a better learning environment. UNH offers such a wide range of classes, and the best part is figuring out what you like and what works best for you.

During my freshman and for a lot of my sophomore years, I was taking a lot of gen-eds and 400 level courses. These courses tend to be very large and I found that most of my teachers didn't even recognize me - let alone know my name. This semester, I am taking a couple of higher level courses pertaining to my major. These classes are significantly smaller, with only about 30-40 kids in each class. I have found that the professors I have for these classes make a much bigger effort to get to know each student and to call them by name. I feel that as the higher level classes you take, the smaller these classes get and the more likely it is that you will develop a relationship with your professors. Also, you can choose personally whether or not you would like to build this relationship.

My major is Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Deaf Studies. It is an amazing major. I'm going to school to be either a speech pathologist or an audiologist. I love the fact that we have an extensive american sign language program here (it was one of the reasons I came here). I feel that I will be able to get a job after college and I am not that worried about it. The one thing I don't like is the uneccessary need for gen eds. I sometimes spent more time studying and doing homework for my useless gen eds. I understand that they want us to be well rounded but I feel that all of the 6 gen eds I have to take while here are a huge waste of time. That time could be put to better use for everyone, the time would go towards major classes which is the real reason we are paying so much money to come here.

The professors are very encouraging and always available to meet out of class. They are also very enthusiastic about their classes and challenge their students to feel the same way.

It all depends on your major, who you have and how much you care. I have found that once you get more in depth with your major the professors start to know who you are and people become close friends and it makes it easier to participate in class. The most unique class I have taken is Making Babies with Karen Niland, I think it is a great course, it doesn't seem like it would be necessarily worthwhile but I learned a great deal from it that is very important to my future.
