University of New Hampshire-Main Campus Top Questions

What are the academics like at University of New Hampshire-Main Campus?

Tristan

The classes at this school are pretty big. Professors don't know your name unless you talk to them after class or go ask them for help. Some people who are intimidated to talk in front of large groups rarely participate in class, not only because of their intimidation but also because it's hard for teachers to do a good job teaching when they have such a large amount of students. There is a good overall academic exposure with the required Gen-Ed's. I feel that the accounting department hasn't done a good job letting students know what they should do since time to get jobs for accounting seniors in during the months of September-October. Its poor location also lacks the ability for students to have jobs or get certain experiences that other schools get to incorporate into their academics.

In my major, Medical Laboratory Science, my professors know my name and how I'm doing in the class. This is because there are about 30 total students in my major per year..the classes are small. In my larger gen ed lectures, the professors don't seem to care at all and they don't know my name. My favorite classes are my MLS courses, my teachers are awesome. Me and my friends definitely have intellectual converstation outside of class, and I know I hear a lot of others going on too. I think UNH is a competitive environment. My major is geared toward getting a job and also learning in general. It really depends on your major and your interest. I feel like you can do anything you want at UNH.

In most of my classes, my professros know me by names. There are, however, lecture classes with up to 300 people where I dont even know my teachers, but that will happens anywhere you go. The teachers that do know me, have always been very helpful and readily available to me outside of class.

Some classes are too big, so professors don't know you well, but that happens anywhere and can sometimes be a better experience - other classes are quite small and really allow the students to get to know their professors and classmates. My favorite class was called "making babies" and it was all about the process of pregnancy, birth, and aftercare-- it was a really cool class to take, and you always get a great reaction out of telling people one of your college courses was "Making Babies." Students are pretty competitive, but not too much, its not as intense as high school, people are more involved in their own work and trying to get the best grades they can, not just Straight A's Across the Board. I think that the UNH education system is geared toward the real world, most of the programs focus on real world applications and doing things like internships and jobs.

Depending on major students study different amounts. The sciences and business students study the most I would say and the liberal arts and psychology dont need to study much. The professors are around outside of class, but I dont usually go see them unless i have a SERIOUS problem because sometimes they just make you more confused. Some students are very competitive and some really dont care but are able to stay just barely. My major is deffinitly very hard and the chem classes at this school are almost impossible. No matter how much i study i just cant do well enough, but its clearly not just me when an exam has to be given a scale of 24 points and a 50 becomes a C.

No, most professors don't know my name. My favorite class is any class that is small. Large classes. Students study a lot, depending on their major. Yes, class participation is common. No, most students don't. Yes, students are competitive. My Theatre and Dance class was very unique. I just switched into communication major so I do not know a lot about the department. No, I do not spend time with my professors outside of class. I think that UNH's academic requirements are perfect, challenging but doable. Geared towards getting a job.

The academics at UNH are awesome. They do not only provide a wide variety of classes but also provide interesting and well thought out class material. The academic resources provided to the students are unbelievable between the writing center, Dimond library and technical services.

If you are looking for an extremely intimate class size, this place is not for you, except for the classes in your major. Freshman year here can be a bit overwhelming in the general education classes that feature over 200 students, but then your english class only has 20. Each semester I've had one or two small intimate classes, then usually a larger class ranging from 50-80, then a gen-ed with about 200. I like to that I get to switch it up and see new people all the time. I'm a sociology major so I'm starting to get more advanced in my topics, and the class sizes are getting smaller, it helps to create an environment where one isn't intimidated to speak out intellectually.

Classes at UNH are very large, so a lot of the time it is hard to get to know your professor. They are really great about checking e-mails though incase you need to get in touch with them.
