What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I know that as a high school senior I thought college would be this huge change. In some ways it is and someways it isn't. I would tell myself not to be so afraid of being a freshman and feeling like an outsider. That awkward feeling passes within weeks of arrival.
I would also tell myself to be ready to meet new people. Classes will be larger and more hands on but I can do it if I just apply myself and work hard. Another thing I would want to tell myself is that the first few weeks are going to be hard. Being away from home and your family will be tough but it will soon pass and you're discover more independence.
The most important thing that I wish I had known would be to put myself out there more. It's okay to be the one to start a conversation and make a new friend. And if it doesn't work out that's okay too. About to go into my junior year I just realized that I wished I had made more relationships, and doing so in the first few months would have been easy.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
If there is one thing about my college decision that I was never worried about, it was my decision to study at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Five years later and I haven't looked back once.
Its difficult to isolate the single greatest aspect of UMD. There are just so many! However, the first and probably most important thing a student on campus will notice are the tunnels. The ENTIRE campus is accessible via tunnels and hallways that stretch from one side of campus to the other. As soon as you enter the campus system, you will not have to go back outside for the rest of duration that you remain on site. Inside the campus, a student will have access to several bookstores, a full-service food court, the library, a coffee shop, countless university support locations (technology services, tutoring services, etc.) and access to every building on campus. In the winters of Northern Minnesota, this may just be the most significant aspect of the campus. Try staying warm walking around downtown Minneapolis?
it is important to remember as well that UMD is under the same banner as the University of Minnesota. As a satellite campus, UMD's faculty are held to the same regulations and requirements as those working at the Twin Cities campus. In fact, a diploma from UMD does not even dictate which campus you studied at! We are ALL students of the University of Minnesota. However, at UMD, you can take advantage of the drastically reduced class sizes. The classes are small enough so that you can choose to intimately know your professors, but are still large enough so it doesn't feel like you are attending high school all over again. It seems to be just about the perfect fit.
UMD's campus has changed much over the past several years. Starting in 2007, UMD has renovated or opened a completely new building every single year. They have added a completely new science and engineering building, a new business school, a renovated life sciences building, and a brand new civil engineering program, complete with its own building. Additionally, there has been a $20 million upgrade to the recreational sports and health center.
UMD is nationally recognized as having one of the highest participating and most diverse recreational sports programs in the country. They one of the largest curling programs in all of collegiate athletics, and host sports from all different walks of life. If there is a sport you play, even obscure sports like ultimate frisbee, there is most likely a team/club/organization that supports it as well. As far as varsity athletics go, that is whole different ball game. UMD has won 4 national championships in the past 3 years! They are the reigning Division I Men's Hockey champions, as well as the reigning Division II football champions. Football has won two national titles in three years, and the Women's hockey program also won a Division I national title several years ago. The new home of Bulldog hockey, the AMSOIL Arena, is entering it's first full year of service. The brand new home of the best college hockey team in the country is the site of the most popular student gathering week in and week out. If you're a hockey fan, or a football fan, there is no better school in the Minnesota for sports action than UMD.
The largest complaint about the UMD campus is parking. While there is generally always SOMEPLACE to park, most of the premier lots fill up well before 8am classes begin. The most frustrating aspect of this ongoing problem is the ability for faculty to purchase student parking passes, but the inability of students to purchase faculty passes.
