It's a great community with lots of things to do. Almost every day there is some event going on where you can win prizes and meet other people. There are a lot of student-run organizations for lots of different interests. The student body is also very LGBTQ-friendly and protective of its POC population. The class sizes are small and you get to know your professors. The only criticism is that the high-up administration doesn't care the most about the students. Sometimes they make frustrating decisions and a lot of that is because it is underfunded. However, I think it is a great opportunity if you don't want to spend too much money on college.

I love this university, very diverse which is something important to me, safe environment, lots of groups/clubs that you can involve yourself in, great university! Food is amazing and has different options, dorm rooms a great as well, area is a safe environment with plenty of downtown night life! Will feel very supportive with staff/advisors etc

    I consider the best thing about my school to be the fact that the quality of the education is high while the cost of attending is low. For me, this is important because I am putting my self through school entirely on my own from here on out. That is a tough burden to bear at my age. It is satisfying to not feel overly stressed about financing my education, because such a feeling truly takes away from what's really important about college: learning.

  6. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

    Sadly, from what I have observed, there is a real lack of school spirit and enthusiasm at my school. My fellow students don't seem to be as eager to learn as I am, and that is a little bit disheartening. I go to each class ready to learn and be inspired, and meanwhile, the kids around me are on their cell phones, dozing off, or engaging in various other distractions. I have not met a great deal of other motivated students, and to me, that is troubling. For this reason, among others, I am planning to transfer next fall.

  8. Describe the students at your school.

    Many students in the lower-level courses seem as though they could not care less about their academic career. Some of them are rude, and will even go so far as to make fun of professors during class. It seems like some of them have trouble reaching the maturity level of a true college student. Once I started taking courses in my major, I found that I had a lot in common with many of my classmates and many of us are in the same classes each semester. We collaborate and work well as students of the Foreign Language Department.

    Southern has a very diverse campus, and everyone enjoys each others company. You will see groups of students, such as the art scholar, guitarist, break dancer, and football player, having a blast together, even if career interest's or hobbies aren't similar. Everyone is always smiling, and it's just a calm, friendly environment.

    It is a great school with many opportunities to meet new friends. It has a very modern library to do research on those hard term papers. Excellent teachers and staff.

    It's like a school for people who don't have a lot of money. The food could be better, and there isn't always a lot of stuff to do on the weekends. Everyone is really mature, and doesn't act childish about things. Everyone helps each other out if they can, and you make friends very easily. There is a lot of school pride.

  16. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

    Greek life is very big at this school. Also, the most popular organizations are Procon, and RHA. They both put on events for students, both on and off campus. Our girls soccer team, boys football, rugby, and basketball team are all popular. Their are intramural sports to join, as well as club sports. Students who live in the dorms are better able to attend campus events, than commuter students because a lot of the events are at night. It's also easier to meet friends if you live on campus, because you have the whole day and weekends to do stuff together. A lot of people go home on the weekends because there isn't always much to do. There are shuttle buses on the weekends that take you to the mall, and the plaza if you want to go shopping. There's also field trips or other campus events on the weekends sometimes.

    I decided to go to this school because there are a lot of clubs and events that keep students entertained, and the campus isn't too big. There are also job opportunities there to apply for.

    Parking has been something to work with, but a new garage has been built, as-well-as a new parking lot opening over this summer (2013).

  19. What are your classes like?

    I'm a journalism major, and right now I'm taking two journalism classes. One is a writing class about print and broadcast writing, but you don't do too much writing. The other class is about the history of journalism, and it's also a speech class. We had to recite the first ammendment, and do other speeches about some of the stuff we learned in the book for the class. Math is a hard subject for me, and so I'm taking one of my math classes for the second time. The math teacher I had my freshman year was the best, he was very interactive with the students, and wanted us to always ask questions. My other math teachers are speedy and if you do ask for help, they help you, but with a yelling tone of voice, which just doesn't help me at all. There's a tutor center, but students are your tutor, and they sometimes have their own way of solving the problems, which isn't always helpful to me. I'm also in biology, which is ok, but there's also a bio lab once a week, which is kind of hard when the tests for the class come because you have to remember lots of terms, but it you study A LOT, you'll pass it. English classes are ok, you just have to type your essays the way the professor wants you to, and your papers usually have to be at least 3 pages or more.

  20. What are the academics like at your school?

    The most popular major is nursing. Some professors are willing to help you a lot, and others will expect you to do some things for yourself. I always go to ratemyprofessor.com before picking my class schedule. My major is journalism, which entails a lot of writing, but you don't do too many papers for journalism. My least favorite class is math. This year i'm actually taking the same math class over for a second time.

  21. Describe the dorms.

    There are dorms and there are also suites. There are 3 bedroom dorms and 2 bedroom dorms. The 3 bedroom costs less, and is what every freshman receives, unless the 2 bedrooms aren't taken up. In a 3 bedroom there's a single bed and a bunkbed. In every room there are only 2 closets, and there are desks, and columns of drawers, so with a 3 bedroom, making space for yourself can get tricky. The dorms are called straightlines because they are where all freshman live on campus. Depending on your credits, and when you are a sophomore, you are able to live in a suite, which is like an apartment, and they cost more because that's when you have to provide your own dishes and you don't get a meal plan like you would in a dorm. In the dorms you have 5 floors. There are guys floors and girls floors, and two RA's live on each floor in case you have a problem, and they also plan activities inside the dorm for residents to attend, so that they can meet each other. Don't bring too much stuff because the rooms aren't big, especially with 3 people in a room. Also bring a fan, a lot of people buy the big square fans because it can get hot in the rooms. When you first walk into a dorm, there's a big lounge area and a desk where two RA's sit, so that they can sign your guests into the building. There's a basement with a pool table and ping pong table. You have to swipe your school ID to get into the building, and of course use your key to get into your room.

All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA. Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
