About half of my professors know my name. The professors that don't know my name I tend to not do as well in their classes.

My studios are really small, so I am comfortable with them, and asking them questions. Most students have intelligent conversations. As far as getting a job in design, I feel like I have no shot. Our job fair is a joke. I am not too worried, I plan on going to graduate school. Students are competitive, but in design, we mainly help each other. Academic requirements are not to steep. I feel like my education is more learning for its own sake.

All of my professors know my name, first and last. My favorite classes are my upper level classes as they are smaller and geared more towards what I am passionate about. Students on campus study all of the time. The library is a popular place to go, but there are always plenty of seats for any type of study environment you'd like. Participation in class in essential. Lots of students participate and those who do are more likely to succeed in the class. In my major we work together on assignments when we are able to and help each other along when one gets stuck. There is in no way any sort of competition involved. I love my elementary education major because there is a lab designed just for us with all sorts of equipment we may need for projects. We also have our own little library and check-out system for technology. I have definitely went to my professors office hours. I went not only to ask about assignments but sometimes just to talk to them. I did have a teacher that made our whole class supper at her house while we were in our practicum experience. I thought this was awesome! I never would have thought that in a school as large as Iowa State that teachers would actually care for you and invite you into their homes just to meet up during a long break from class.

The first 2 years, classes are usual big lectures so the professor does not necessarily know your name. but to make up for these large lectures, there are usually smaller tutorials or SI sections where you get to know the TA. The upper level classes are usually smaller and you get to know the professors better. Competitiveness between students depends on your major. In dietetics it is pretty competitive because most everyone is competing for the same internships.

Those who get good grades are the students who attend class. My major is kinesiology and health, which promotes healthy lifestyles since sedentary lifestyles are becoming way too common.

My major is not very rigorous. I think there could maybe be a little more consistency, some attendance policies are very rigid while other professors do not require you to attend class at all. Some professors are not flexible at all for things like job interviews. I think sometimes the education is geared towards getting students through college instead of more practical application.

The class sizes are pretty large for most courses, which is expected on a huge campus. The school seems mainly focused on Engineering, Design and Agriculture, but is indeed a great school for all three. I think the classes are a lot tougher than people would expect from an Iowa school, the curriculum is very detailed and most professors don't tend to give you much leaniency with class work.

Greek students generally do better academically than non-greek students.
