What are the academics like at Iowa State University?

Nicole

I believe that most of the education I received at Iowa State was for learning, rather than being geared toward getting a job. I wish there would have been more focus on 'real' information.

I love my classes and feel that they will benefit me in the future with my career a lot of classes focus on knowledge you'll need in the future.

My favorite teacher...I don't think I have one. All my classes were big (even the 400 level ones), so I never really got to know any of my profs well. I do remember the grad student I worked with during practicum for my major, Shawn Haake. He was so kind and we got along well. He proved to be a great resource for me in learning about the research side of psychology, and helped me prepare applications for graduate school. Shawn also worked side of side with Dr. David Vogel, who was able to write me letters of recommendation. One thing I didn't really like about Iowa State is the class size. As mentioned above, all my classes were big, and I didn't get the chance to work with any profs on a more personal level. Attending a graduate school where there are 18 students in my cohort, my profs know my name, my husband's name, and my academic strengths and weaknesses without having to look at a sheet of paper.

I didn't have any problems with the academics. did professors know my name? If I wanted them to, if you get involved, and utilize the academic resources, you got a lot out of your education. The resources were readily available, its whether you choose to take advantage, after all you are a college student now, no one holds you hand anymore, you have to search out the hand to hold, as it should be!

I think that I got an amazing education at ISU. I do feel like they lacked on preparing you in the real world though. I would have liked more classes on searching for jobs and actually where to look for jobs and less on interview questions and how to act. I think that as classes get smaller, yes most professors do know names but the larger lectures they do not which is understandable. The most unique and beneficial class that I've taken at ISU was Fashion Illustration of Experimental Design. They really challenged me to step outside my box of normality which taught me a lot about myself!

Kathleen

I think most students were geared toward getting a job. We didn't really discuss academics outside of class.

The sports science program prepaired me well for my grad. studies. I got into every Physical therapy school I applyed for and all my schooling really helped me be successful. I graduated with my DPT.

Iowa State offers a variety of different classes from bowling to industrial engineer classes. My favorite class at Iowa State was computer science because you could work at your own pace since the class is offered online. It allowed you to get your homework done early so you could get it out of the way.

Karen

Very few professors knew my name. I didn't have many intellectual conversations outside of class. I took a philosophy class that was the most interesting and thought provoking. I never spent time outside of class with the psych professors. It would have really helped me if one of them would have taken an interest in me. I went on to get my doctorate in psych and it would have helped to been more involved in the department as an undergrad.
