College of Southern Maryland is a great community collage for those who are starting their college path or are returning to continue their education. they are tons of ways connect with both fellow students and faculty so you are not alone. if you are struggling there are opportunities for you to get help.

The classes are small, approximately 12-35 students and many of the professors know their students by name. The campus is kept clean and the buildings are nice, as well as the outside areas. They have a nice big library with a lot of computers and a quiet zone (where students may not talk to one another, listen to music, or be loud in any way). I never ate at the cafeteria, I always brought a lunch; their microwave was never clean. Student life and events are encouraged, but campus events are not a priority for faculty or students. I have been a dual-enrollment since my Junior year in high school, I am currently a Freshman in college and I will be transferring after the Spring 2021 semester to a 4-year institution. The teachers were super accommodating to me as a dual-enrollment student and are still incredibly supportive of each of their students, dual-enrollment or college students. CSM is a great choice for dual-enrollment students looking for college credit, high school seniors who are not ready for a university yet, and college students preparing to transfer. Overall, the College of Southern Maryland is a good community college to start your education at.

It's okay. More of a means to an end than anything else, but it gets the job done. I enjoyed my time at CSM, but after two years I am more than ready to move on, as I think are most students after an extended period of time there. The campus activities and faculty don't do much to encourage active engagement and loyalty; I, for one, don't own any CSM merchandise or other identifiers to commemorate my time there.

A very lovely school with sparky individuals, students and teachers treat one another with respect and camaraderie. The campus atmosphere and general aura are fantastic and I recommend getting invested in the student life regarding politics, sports, on-campus and off-campus entertainment, just for starters. Some teachers, rightfully, aren't as appreciated or respected as others, but that hardly does represent this community college as a whole.

    If I could go back and see myself as a college senior, I would tell myself to make sure your in as many school activities as you can. Surround yourself and get involved with people that you can benefit greatly from. Keep your head in the books because it will all payoff in the end. The real world is a whole nother place outside of school.

  6. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

    The worst thing about my school is the multiple campuses in different locations and the requirement of online access for some classes. The cost of transportation for me is exceedingly high and I sometimes cannot afford to get to classes that I paid tuition for. The online access is an issue because of where I live, I do not have internet access because the only option is satellite internet, which is too expensive for me, and I cannot afford the gas to go to a campus or local library to access the internet, hindering my full potential to succeed.

  9. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

    My school is best known for it's convienience and it's advisors. The college of southern maryland is located throughout Southern Maryland's tri-county area. The college of Southern Maryland has 4 different locations: Laplata, PrinceFrederick, Waldorf, and Leonardtown. The advisors are also very helpful because they will sit down with you one on one and make sure he/she on the right path and that the student understands what is going on. The advisors also have follow up appointments that they have after the students reach a certain amount of credits.

    My school is very diverse. We are located next to a Navy base so we have alot wide variety of people coming to join our community. My school is just the right size fo me. It's not too big yet not too small. My school fits perfectly in our neghibohood to give everyone a chance at learning. With there not being hard requirements to get in everyone has a chance at further education, and i really enjoy knowing that fact.

    I wish I knew how to be confident as a writer and as a student. To have better time management and use the necessary sources to accomplish my goals in a better way.

  12. What are the academics like at your school?

    All classes are difficult if you make them. What I learn in my classes are easy but that is only because they usually apply to my major and I really do like my major (Biological Sciences and Biotechnology). The teachers offer enough information for us to understand and apply it to life. There are only a few teachers that go beyond - like my Microbiology teacher. Because most of the students in my class are nursing students, she has to make sure we all understand it so we can apply it to a healthcare setting. We do have clubs that correspond with some majors like Robotics or Business.

    I wouldn't know of any stereotypes since this school is pretty diverse, but most of the students that are black often have a stereotypical high school vibe about them.

  14. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

    I definately brag the most about my professors. All of my professors for the fall 2009 semester were so good and talented. My four professors all loved teaching and were so passionate when they spoke. Passion in a teacher's voice is very inspiring for a college freshmen. Alos, my professors were not like others; they went above and beyond teaching their curriculum. They answered questions that students had with ease. And they could relate any question to a problem in their major or field of interest.

  15. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

    I often have issues with the advising department. I want to set a plan for my future and make sure that Im on the right track. I often run into issues either getting an appointment with an advisor or with staff not returning phone calls.

All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA. Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
