Oakwood is very interesting HBCU University, which I am looking forward to graduating with my MBA Degree in 2025. I play basketball and atmosphere that the team has, made me feel right at home and at ease. Although I am not a religious person, I am willing to adapt to the school for sake of my future.

I enjoy it here at Oakwood. Everyone is friendly and outgoing. The sports is close knit here and everyone is friends. Huntsville is a great area as well! The campus food could be better but it is a vegan campus so do with that what you will but it’s still not too bad.

Oakwood University FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at Oakwood University?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for Oakwood University is 48%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

This is rather tricky to answer as I skipped high school and started college at age 13. But I do advise my friends that if they are going to take college credits make sure they will count towards any degree if you do not know what you want to major in. I would also stress that they should map out thier goals and how they plan to meet them while taking into account expenses. I just completed two years at the community college and am in a university now. Not only did I save greatly on tuition, the classes are smaller and students get more individulaized instruction. Lastly, I would recommend that they enjoy this experience and point in life as we prepare for our futures.

  14. Why did you decide to go to this school?

Honestly, the reason why I decided to go to this school is very vague. I visited, with my sister who is n alumni, my sophomore year of high school. I immediately fell in love with their biology program. I loved how elaborate and extensive it was. I also LOVED the fact that the school was highly based off my religion-- Seventh Day Adventist Christian. That was the main reasons at first. I immediately applied and I actually got accepted and it felt like the happiest moment in my life. When I got there, I fell even more in love with the school. I made awesome friends, experienced awesome (and not so awesome) academics, joined social clubs, and mostly I was finally independent. I loved Oakwood back then and I love it now. Oakwood University is an AWESOME school... you just have to find your reason why you love it so much and why you are willing to spend 4 years experiencing your time there.

  17. What is your overall opinion of this school?

I absolutely LOVE my school, Oakland University. I really like the size of the university. It is not small and not super big. It is just the right size. There is a lot of school pride. The Golden Grizzlies, the men's basketball team have made it to the NCAA tournament and they are The Summit League champions. We have a student cheer section called "The Grizz Gang". They are the most spirited student section I have seen. Oakland is still growing, even in a recession. We have a medical school that just opened in 2011. We also have a new Human Health building with new facilities. The most frequent complaint is about parking, but really there is not a parking problem, it is a walking problem. There are enough parking spots for all of the students. Also, if you get to class half an hour early you shouldn't have a problem. My favorite part of Oakland is the atmosphere. It is just so welcoming and friendly. It makes me feel like I'm at home.

  18. What are the academics like at your school?

Academics are just wonderful at Oakland. All of my professors know my name, and not just because I am an over-achiever. They know everyone in the class's name. It also helps that the average class size is 35 students. My favorite class was an Honors College class. It was called: China: an Anthropological Perspective. It was a class based on discussion and was really stimulating. We also watched Disney's Mulan; that was really fun! I do spend time with professors outside of class. I go to their office hours and talk about random things and it is good to have faculty that know you.

  20. What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

I think the stereotype is that most of the students are uninvolved, commuter students. This stereotype is fairly accurate. However, there is a rich campus life. All you have to do is get involved. There are so many student organizations for students to join. As far as living on campus, there are only about 2000 students who live on campus, whereas around 19,000 students who attend Oakland. So, it is mainly a commuter campus. I live on campus and LOVE it. If you have the chance to live on campus, I would definitely suggest doing so.
