Diversity and inclusion. Imagine this: It's 2054, but you're still fighting for people of color to be included in most institutions. Yes, that may be reality for many, but not for students at the University of Central Missouri. The best part of UCM is the diversity. Bringing students from all over the world and immersing them into a collective culture, ensuring effective collaboration and appreciation. UCM not only allows diverse students to join their programs but also ensures that the mule (school mascot) goes around the world to learn from different cultures.

UCM is a really good school given the price point. It's obviously not an Ivy League, but that's part of what makes it special! It's a smaller school with a smaller campus and within 5 weeks of your freshman year, you start seeing plenty of people you know around campus. Everyone says "Hi!" over and over as they walk to class. By your sophomore year, you know basically every person you pass. When you get to class, your teachers are nice. Some of them work too hard and overload themselves which makes classes challenging at times. They're nice, the buildings are nice, and the culture is nice though and that's what makes it worth it. Everyone complains about the dorms, and it's true, they're old; but so is your Grandma! And you still love her! That's the vibe of this campus. It's a little worn down, but it gets the job done. In the end, we'll be graduating with a degree and 25% of the debt that everyone else will have. I like it at UCM.

I think the University of Central Missouri is going to be a great college choice. I fell in love with the campus and the college when I came for my first visit. They were the first college I visited and I kept finding myself comparing all of the other colleges I looked at to them and that made the decision for me to choose UCM super easy!

Phaedra - 03/20/2024

The school itself is nice, but as an alumnus of the arts there could be much more funding put into that department. I think there also could be benefit to supporting more arts beyond just the art majors, as most of the campus is aware of sport events, maybe giving the same publicity to art events would be good for all students.

University of Central Missouri FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at University of Central Missouri?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for University of Central Missouri is 74%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I were to talk to my 17-year-old self, I would tell her to go straight to the University of Central Missouri instead of going to community college first. There were several things I wish I would have done as an undergraduate including being more involved in on-campus activities. However, more pertinent is the relationships I developed with my professors. I wish I could tell my high school self what to major and minor in so I wouldn't have changed them so much. I may have gotten to take more classes with professors that I particularly favor. Also, I would have looked into getting a job on campus so I wouldn't have had to go home every weekend to work. I think I would have enjoyed my undergraduate experience more if I hadn't been so tunnel-visioned on the degree. Of course, the degree is why I went on to UCM but there is so much more to the experience that I missed out on.

My school is best knows for its school spirit, its wide spread majors and greek life. The school prides itself on getting student involved and meeting new people. They are always looking for new majors to add and not just to have those majors but find the best professors around to teach them. And the greek life doesn't just involve the greeks in gets the whole school into doing activities and making a contrabution to the enviroment.

  12. What are the academics like at your school?

Professors only know your name if you speak up in class, and who knows, one day you might need them for a reference so it will be in your best interest for them to know who you are. My favorite class has been race, class, and gender with Miss Greer. My least favorite class is Geology. I spend about 40 percent of my time studying, and I know most students probably spend less. Students really get into and enjoy in depth class discussion, it is a time where you can really experience both sides of a subject. I hear all the time students having intellectual conversations outside of class. Here, students really get into their school work. My major is psychology I spend a lot of time with professors outside of class clarifying notes, and furthering discussion concepts. I feel great about the schools academic requirements. They aren't too tedious and they aren't too loose. I think that the education at this school geared more toward learning for its own sake.

  14. What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Many people may think that the students here are hicks or hillbillies, country kids with no cultural experience; simply because our school is located in Missouri. However, that stereotype is very inaccurate! We have tons of exchange students from different countries and cultures, students from the city, and yes even some from the country. There is a very nice mix of backgrounds and cultures here at UCM.

  16. What is your overall opinion of this school?

The best thing about my school would surely be the school spirit. I rarely find a college student without it. When students get involved on campus they get more out of their college experience One thing that I would change about the University of Central Missouri is really nothing. I love this school. From the amazing price range to the wonderful teachers. I think that my school is just right. The class sizes are not too big and not too small, they are usually about 30 students. When I tell people that I go to this school, their reaction is excited. I have never had a bad reaction from telling people that I attend UCM. On campus, I spend most of my time studying in my room or hanging out with friends. When you are in college you have a responsibility to you education, and I surely take that seriously. UCM is a typical college town. My opinion of the school's administration is fairly good. If you have a question, it will be answered in a timely manner. However, I have had issues regarding the transfer of some files to UCM. This may have been a slight hiccup in their business handling.. There hasn't been any large controversy on campus. There is so much school pride here at UCM! The students here take their sports seriously. The unusual thing about the school is that there may be a ghost in Yeater. There hasn't been any experience here that is of any special quality. There hasn't been any frequent student complaints that I am aware of.

  17. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

The most popular organizations on campus are the greek organizations. The groups I'm involved with are NSCS, the honors college, and psychology club. Students in dorms usually don't leave their doors open for obvious reasons.Stealing. The athletic events are insane, there is so much school spirit. The guest speakers get a lot of attention from students are residents along the campus. I haven't been to any theatre productions. I have not seen a dating scene especially because I am in a relationship. I met most of my friends either in class or in the dorms. I am NEVER awake at 2a.m. There is a home coming tradition that happens each year. People party quite a bit here. To me sororities and fraternities are not that important, to other people they are life. Last weekend i went home. On saturday night you can go a party and not drink haha. I don't do anything off campus.

  18. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

The stereotype of students at my school is that all we do is party. Although partying is a sizable percentage of what the students do here, we are high achieving in academics and there is a lot more to UCM students than partying. Of course we have our jocks, frat kids, and nerds, but who doesn't!I think that people have the wrong idea about UCM. We are a great school with great students and professors.

  19. What is the stereotype of students at your school?

I think this depends on who you're asking. For the students that actually go there, the stereotype is lots of people in sweatpants and sweatshirts doing one of two things: freaking out and drinking lots of coffee trying to pass, or just there for the social experience and not caring.

  20. Why did you decide to go to this school?

I decided to go to this school because it wasn't too far away from home, but far enough so I couldn't always feel my parents breathing down my back. Being a music major, I saw the marching band and how devoted they were and I hadn't seen a college marching band who sounded and preformed as well as UCM's. UCM was not only my top choice for college, but after visiting campus for the first time it was my only choice. The huge thing that settled me on this school was when i met with the professors. They were excited to meet me and answered all of my questions even about different areas in college. And when i visited for a second time they remembered my name!

  21. Tell us about the sports scene on campus.

Our games are always a pretty big deal. You see the red and black out everywhere. At the same time, it's really cool to have those athletes in your classes with you. It's not uncommon to have brief little discussions or congratulations regarding how they did.
