What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I graduated at 17 & had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had no interest in studying more, much less focusing on a career. I ended up going to college but goofing off and it cost me in both tuition.
The best advice I would have for myself would be to get out in the world for a couple of years and see what I enjoy doing for work.
I ended up in a job doing working with a construction crew. That experience was the inspiration I wish I'd had as a senior.
I'm not saying college isn't right for many or even most seniors. I'm suggesting that although I always had the plan to finish college one day, I may have saved myself considerable heartache by finding the path for me first.
If I had the option, would I go back & tell myself all this wisdom? No. Even though it would make my life easier to have a degree already and have a successful career, I would have missed the challenges and the learning curve that has made me who I am today.

What's unique about your campus?
The best thing about UCC is how local it is and how accessible it is to everyone in the county. There have also been a lot of recent improvements to the campus, such as adding parking spaces, repaving the sidewalks, and adding more classes for the influx of students that we have had recently. There have also been additions to the staff to handle the increases. Overall, everything is handled very well and the faculty are very accomodating and helpful.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
The worst thing about Umpqua Community College is how liberal it is becoming. The student government and the administration is becoming increasingly difficult to work with. There has also been a large increase in the number of students, so classes have gotten crowded and parking has become difficult to the point of impossibility.

UCC is a very relaxed campus compared to four year univerities and even my high school experience, making schooling seem a little less stress full.

What kind of person should attend this school?
I have previously attended six other junior colleges and universities, and although certain majors tend to attract more younger students than others, I would encourage any man or woman, of any age and background, who has an honest desire to better themselves and find satisfying work even in a rural area, to take action and talk to a counselor at UCC, then follow your dream and start classes here, so that you and your family can have a better tomorrow.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
The campus is local to me, which I needed in order to still be able to support and care for my family. It is also very environmentally friendly, which I care a lot about. The grounds are well kept and peaceful to be around. Above all, the support I have received from my educational advisor supercededs all of that. He really helped me get my foot in the door and point me in the right direction.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.
We've got a good relationship with the state colleges in Oregon and the instructors and advisors are well-versed in the curriculum at those schools. The instructors I've had are all top-knotch and most go out of their way to give you all the tools you'll need to succeed. We've got a good technology department (computers, surveying, engineering, electrical) and a pretty good nursing program that has been steadily expanding in the past few years.
