The University of Texas at Austin Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Lauren

the most popular groups are probably those associated with school or majors. it depends on what dorm you live in, i lived in Scottish Rite Dormitory, an off campus all girls dorm and i absolutly loved it! no one ever locked there doors and always kept them open to anyone. but in huge public dorms where you obviously dont know everyone there most peolpe will probably keep their doors closed. athletic events are popular, football is the most. mens basketball is probably the 2nd most popular. I met my closest friends at Scottish Rite Dormitory, where i lived my Freshman year. On Tuesday at 2 am i am always awake either reading over some ntoes in bed, getting ready for bed, hanging out in the apartment with my roomates, or watching tv. traditions events: 40 acres, south by southwest, austin city limits, explore UT, to name a few. There are peolpe who party every single night. peolpe who party every weekend. and peolpe who have never partied at all. UT has every kind of person. fraternities and sororities act like their important but theyre really not. they are like, less then 1{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the whole ut population. Last weekend i went to a concert in Austin on Friday night, and went home for the first time this whole semester on Saturday night to hang out with my family. things to do on a saturday nght that doesnt involve drinking: going to a movie, going to a concert, eating out at tons of rstaraunts, go to a party dont drink, hang out wtih friends, anything you would do in any normal city. off campus i go out to eat, go to movies, go to concerts, and go shopping.

Athletic program is great; obviously football is huge (OU weekend up in Dallas is the experience of a lifetime) but hoops are picking it up too. We get presidential debates and CEO's coming through. It's nice to have the size and prominence that we do. I was even able to bring a CNBC show down here.

What are the most populat groups/organizations/clubs/teams on campus?- There is NO answer to that question! Each person has their own organization that they love. Then there are those who don't join organizations because they are social in other ways. The most popular team on campus- DEFINITELY football. A group i'm involved with?- AEPhi sorority. I have met some of the most amazing girls. The process of getting into a sorority is a bit intense, but it's well worth it! Not only do we like to have fun, but we give back to our community and charitable organizations through philanthropy events. Completely fulfilling. How popular are athletic events?- VERY popular. SO many students bleed burnt orange, no matter the sport. How did I meet my closest friends?- Some through sorority, some through class! What traditions/events happen each year?- Most of UT's annual traditions involve welcoming new students to UT, and welcoming back old students after the summer. Also, there are a number of 'pep rallies' during sports seasons (especially football) to show support for our teams. How often do people party?- Depends on the person! But UT definitely fits the definition of a party school. There is always a party going on I think! How important are fraternities/sororities?- Greek life is definitely a big deal here. You'll see Greek letters on t-shirts everyday, all across campus. It's not the only way to meet people, though! There are so many organizations that are not Greek if Greek life does not appeal to someone. What can you do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking?- The food in this city is AMAZING! Any Saturday night it's fun to just go out and try a new restaurant. There is also AMAZING live music, which definitely are enjoyable without drinking!

I absolutely LOVE my the social life at Texas. Austin nightlife is one of a kind. Between 6th Street and West Campus, there is always something to do at night. The amazing thing about this university is you could find a party any night of the week within a 5 mile radius. People here love to party, so it's often difficult to balance school with your social life. I have found myself in those tight situations where I could either study for my test or go to a pary with everyone else. This has taught me discipline and responsibility. I just have to remind myself that there will ALWAYS be another party if I can't go out one night. The weekends start on Thursday here (if not as early as Wednesday), and seem longer that the school weeks. When I think back on my college experience here I will remember my great times going out with friends, not that test I failed. My favorite social activity to do in Austin would probably be going out for dinner and drinks with my friends on a weekend night before heading downtown. Even though we always end up going to that same Mexican restaurant because it's "tradition", there is always a new restaurant to experience in Austin. I can't place my finger on why this activity is so thoroughly enjoyable, but it's usually how nights begin for my friends and me. It is so easy to make friends here because of all the different social groups the school offers. I came to college with my five best friends from high school. All of our parents were a little worried we would stay in our clique and not branch out in college. We ended up all pledging a different sorority or participating in other organizations. We are still good friends of course, but we definitely went our separate ways. I am involved in Kappa and Texas Spirits. I am more active in Kappa. I have met some of my best friends through the sorority, and love all of our social events throughout the year. I live at the sorority house now, which is absolutely wonderful. On a typical Thursday night everybody is getting ready together with the music blarring from room to room. Sometimes my favorite part of the night is getting ready with my friends (probably a girl thing). Upon arriving back at the house at around 2:45 am, it is best to bypass the kitchen on your way upstairs. Late night eating is a problem in the sorority house. I feel like I am always meeting someone new when I go out in Austin. Downtown Austin provides a great environment for meeting new people because there are so many different bars to go to. If you don't drink, Austin still offers many wonderful social activities for nighttime. For example, Alamo Drafthouse is a movie theater where you can watch and have dinner at the same time. They are always putting on special entertaining shows, as well. Also, on the first Thursday of each month, South Congress stores offer a nighttime experience with food and shopping, and unbeatable combination. These are just two of the many activites Austin offers that don't involve drinking.
