What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
The most important advice I could give myself as a high school senior would’ve been apply to as many scholarships as I could. Don’t expect money to come to you or fall from the sky, you have to go get it and it may be hard, but you cannot give up. I would have asked as many questions as I could about financial aid instead of thinking I knew everything, because clearly I don’t know everything. I would have told myself to save every penny I had, because I will need it later.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
When I talk to my friends back home about my school I tend to talk about how great my teachers are and how they are willing to help anytime you need it. This is something I pride my school in because some schools have lecture halls with 100 students and sometimes more! All of my classes had no more than 25 students. This helps also with in class diccussions and interaction with the teacher and fellow students.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
I wish I had known that unless you were going to join a sorority or sports team, you would not fit in. I am currently upset that I chose to go to this school because I feel misplaced. I wish I had taken more time to get all the facts from different perspectives around the school. I was informed that the Hillel (a Jewish organization) was active and full of excitement, but I have yet to experience any sort of their activities due to the lack of them. This school is clean and beautiful, but those are the only attributes.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
The cost. The cost of tuition rises every single year by large quantities for no reason. Many of the fees that are tacked onto the bill are rather absurd and unreasonalble as well. The cost is almost not worth the undergraduate education received in many majors of study.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
Once you pay your full tuition bill and books, that is usually all you will have to pay. There are so many perks to attending Nova. There is a state of the Art Fitness Center, several resturants and venues. They pretty much have it where you hardly ever have to leave the campus for anything. It is also home of the training facility of the Miami Dolphins, how cool is that? They have small class sizes so that you have more one on one with the instructors and not just a number in a class.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Greek organizations like Delta Phi Epsilon and Kappa Sigma which throw big events that fundraise for charities are popular. So is Student Government Association, which I am a part of, because we throw the biggest party, Homecoming, and we also change things around campus (like extending hours of the food court, [we have a 24/7 Starbucks!], adding power outlets, and such). Because Starbucks is always open I may go at 2am while doing laundry with a good friend. I recently watched the theather production Cabaret which was awesome. Homecoming week is very eventful and includes the anual raft races, challelor tailgate, deep blue fest, and the homecoming party. This year, the week ended with a special guest the comedian Kevin Hart. Sharkapalooza which occurs at the beginning of the year exposes organizations. There are many giveaways and overall it is lots of fun. I am also part of Ablaze, a Christian ministry on campus which is very active. The Razor's Edge Scholarship Leadership Program, which I am also a member of, offers a great experience. Those of us in the program live on the same floor and are like a big family. I did not get to live in the freshman residence halls, but I have heard that it is a friendly environment where doors are left opened and everyone gets to know the others on their floor.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
The student body at Nova is very diverse. Therefore, it is hard to generalize them into any particular stereotype. I can say that the students tend to be intellectual and are very focused on education. Nova is also a private school, which does include many students that are well off and parents that can pay for a private school education. The campus is in the south Florida metropolitan area. so many of students are commuter students. There are many foreign students at NOVA, and as a result the school also has much diversity in terms of religion.

What are the academics like at your school?
I am a Biology major in the premedical track, so I could most adequately describe academics within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. So far I have not had any outright horrible professors. Everyone knows who the "bad" professors are and who the great ones are. Classifying quality of professors is difficult, though, because while some may favor an easy professor who gives no homework and gives review packets for tests, others like myself favor challenging professors who force you to think of the material critically. Two of my favorite classes were medical terminology and biology II honors. In Biology II, we took a trip to the Everglades and a group of students also went snorkeling. My professor was enthusiastic about the material which encouraged me to learn and pay attention. My professor for medical terminology also showed genuine interest in us and offered opportunities to develop as medical school candidates. Next semester I am doing a research project under his supervision while volunteering in the emergency department at a local hospital. Since there are no auditorium-sized classes, discussion is encouraged. Especially interesting are honors classes like one I took this semester: "The Problem of Consciousness." We read 4 books by leading neuroscientists in the field including Incognito by David Eagleman. Eagleman is coming to our school next semester as part of the Distinguished Speakers program, so it is awesome that I already know about him and have read one of his books. There are many good places to study around campus, and you will find many students studying at the library and the University Center. The study rooms in the library and main residential hall, The Commons, are great. Students within my major are a bit competitive, but it is not so fervent that people are back stabbing each other. I have found that we actually work together and advise each other on what classes to take, different opportunities, and such. You do need to take responsibility for yourself though. You cannot rely on an academic advisor to tell you exactly what classes to take every semester. You need to do your own research and talk to different people including faculty.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
Nova has enabled me to enroll in a Masters of Writing program in which I have only 12 other students in my class at each time. Therefore, the personal experience I have obtained has come from an enriching environment where I am not just a number on an attendance sheet. This is an incredible experience and something many Universities do not offer. The fact that each professor knows you by name is amazing, and encourages you to not only attend each class, but invigorates you to meet with them during their office hours to discuss not only a particular class, but your future plans.
Students who attend Nova have the utmost pride in their campus, and I believe this is due to the small class sizes and incredibly upbeat teachers. The study centers are always busy with groups of students studying together and helping one another learn. There are events almost every week, sometimes even more than one event a week, and plenty of amazing speakers who also create a sense of pride in being a "Shark", as Nova students are known.
There is no need to leave campus in order to live in a college town, because Nova is a college town in itself. With an array of stores, study areas, sports games, and eateries on campus, students find themselves not only learning, but have fun and socializing at Nova.
The one experience I will remember the most during my time at Nova is the first day of school. I had moved from Tampa and knew no one nor anything about the area of Fort Lauderdale. Within a two hour class, I had made twelve friends, an amazing connection with a teacher, and already had plans to go explore the beaches of Fort Lauderdale with my fellow classmates. Each student that attends Nova seems to take pride in both their school and their town. In an especially diverse community like South Florida, I think this kinship is key in creating a truly special college experience.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
Nova Southeastern University is a private university with multiple locations and several online programs. Since it is a private university, many believe that everyone that attends Nova must be rich or must take out a lot of student loans to pay for tuition. Many students receive scholarships that help pay for some or all of their tuition. Also, many programs, such as the Business program, offer students to opt out of many of the courses in their program, if they have work experience related to their major. This allows students to finish their program faster and with less money coming out of their pocket.
Although many people may only think of majors in the medical field, business and in law, when considering Nova, there are many other programs worth considering. There are education programs that have been added that are specific to middle grade education and Nova is one of the few schools that offers a Master's in Writing program.
Nova Southeastern University does not have a football team, which often makes people think that there is not a good amount of school spirit. Even without a football team, there are many days that students can be found in the field playing football. There are other sport teams offered at the university, such as golf, rowing and basketball to name a few. Nova Southeastern University still carries a strong sense of school spirit with its academic programs, school groups and school events.
