If you are a person who likes to be surrounded by nature, Kapiolani Community College is the way to go. The atmosphere in the campus is peaceful and relaxing because the location is near by the mountain we call "Diamond Head." It is one of the most recognized Hawaii landmark due to its cultural significance. If you try to go for a walk outside, you can also see the spectacular view of Waikiki and the beach. The view is breathtaking, especially during sunrise/sunset. Personally, I prefer studying outside their library because you can hear the ocean waves and it helps me to focus on my studies even more. Additionally, they offer a lot of opportunities not only to Hawaii residents, but also to foreign students. The faculty members as well as the professors are very welcoming towards to students and they will be happy to help if you're struggling in school, or life in general. They can help you financially or even mentally. Lastly, there's Starbucks inside the campus as well as bookstore where students can buy their books, school supplies, and uniforms at a very friendly price. The culinary students also serve appetizing meals during lunch and there's a food truck near campus if you prefer bentos or packed lunch. Overall, I will highly recommend going to Kapiolani Community College as it is ranked as #1 for online associates & community college education in Hawai'i and #4 best online community college in the nation. Even if it's only a community college, I believe that I get the same education as the students who attend a university. PLUS, the tuition and fees is way cheaper so you can save a lot of money while assuring that you are receiving a high quality education.

Sisilia - 06/02/2020

There is no other campus more willing to help students achieve their academic goal like Kapiolani Community College. They are so engaged with the students, each department helps mold and teach the students their study of major for their future careers.

Tasha - 01/09/2020

I admit I was nervous first to attend. But I have grown to like my campus a lot. I have found the staff very welcoming, helpful and friendly. Personally I had so many questions before attending and I haven't had anyone not want to help me. I feel generally safe at the campus with lots of security and people who care to step in if someone is in need of help.

Great college to go and nice people including the professors.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I find this essay question rather hysterical because in my little spare time I often think about this. There is a long list of things I advice I would give myself as a high school senior on what to expect and prepare for in college life. The main piece of advice that always comes to mind is to learn how to take thorough notes during lectures. It is impossible to take notes word for word as the professor is speaking. When I try writing the notes in a shorter form, I often find the notes to be unclear and confusing. I have confidence that I will become much better at this as time goes on. However if I would have been better at this a high school senior, I would have a head start in my college career.

  5. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I moved from to minnesota to go to college here in Hawaii. I am sure that you know the weather in minnesota is currently undesirable at best. This being the case, I try my very best not to "brag" about my college experience in hawaii. I do inform them how great all of my professors are, and how my awesome professors do a great job of teaching me subjects of studies I once struggled with. I also tell them that my college has a beautiful campus that is a peaceful enviroment that is great to learn in.

  8. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about my school is the distance I have to travel. It's far away from where I live and it takes me about an hour and a half to get there. I have to catch the bus everyday because if I was to drive it would be a waste on gas. I don't have money to pay for gas so the bus is my only alternative.

  10. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

KCC is best known for its culinary and nursing field. It is the home for Culinary Institute of the Pacific, where they have their own resturant on campus and residence & students are able to go there. Even though it is a 2 year college, they offer an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing). This is very good because after we recieve that certificate we are able to go to a 4 year university and work at the same time.

  11. What are the academics like at your school?

My favorite class right now would be my speech class because that is the first class that i actually got to meet new people and be more social. My least favorite class would be my History 151 class because i don't really like just sitting and listening to lectures. I am more a hands on person. Class participation is always required in all classes that i have been in. Yes, all the students that our in my major are very competitive. My major is culinary and i really enjoy being in this field because the instructors are very well known and helpfully. outside of class i try to help out at events with the instructors to advance in my skills.

  12. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

To be honest i don't really know of any clubs on campus. I don't think we have any clubs on our campus. i don't see a lot of couples on campus. I meet my closest friends through some of the classes i took last semester. i don't think people part at my school because we are a community college. The things i do off campus is work and go shopping.

  13. What is your overall opinion of this school?

After thinking about all the schools that i would want to go to i kept going back to KCC because they have a great culinary program. I think our school is kind of too small for my taste because its a college and when i think of college i think of a big campus. When i tell people about the school i go to they always wonder why i choose this school and i would tell them that i am there because i am a culinary major. The most frequent student complaint that i have heard was that we don't hold that much activities, like all we do is go to school and go home or work. They talk about bonding and being more social.

  15. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Before I came to college, I wish that I had known how difficult it could be. I wish that I had more guidance in figuring out what I wanted to do before I just started taking random classes. I felt like that really set me back, because I was taking classes that I thought were helpful, but in actually are not for my intended major.

  16. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

For myself the worst thing about school is the distance. I reside in Waipahu, so KCC is a long journey. So getting to school is quite an adventure for me, because I choose to take the city bus. It takes almost 2 hrs to get to school and 2 busses to get to KCC.
