What should every freshman at Indiana University-Bloomington know before they start?

While my classes have of course been valuable, I think my best learning experiences have been when I'm out of them. Evenings after class, sitting in the dining hall, I've met hundreds of people and flirted with their viewpoints and research, beliefs and complaints. I get snippets of the lives of thousands of students every day just by walking to class. The thing that has most developed through my college experience is my willingness to learn; I'm more hungry for information now that I have a slight understanding of how much of it is out there. I have a healthier appreciation and desire for the experiences of other cultures and fields of study. Perhaps my classes teach me how to silkscreen and apply metaphor, but my time outside the class has been a rapid succession of crashcourses on physics, environmental impact, psychology, animal behavior, brain chemistry, survival technique, home economics, and of course, gender studies. It's the liberal arts experience that will surely leave me completely transformed.

College has been one of the most important experiences in my life so far. I've gotten a well-rounded education, a great life experience with my new tutoring job, and the knowledge that I need in order to progress in life. I feel that the education that I've received at my community college has been priceless and incomparable to anything else because it's given me the tools that I need in order to continue with my career goal of being a mathematics professor on a university level. The experiences that I've had have not only helped me move forward educationally and career-wise, but also emotionally. I've become a more independent human-being, more self-reliant, and I have learned the value of money and success, but most importantly, life and family.

My short time here at Indiana University has been beyond amazing. I have grown up here more in the last six months than in my entire life. Not only have I become more knowledgable through my studies but I have also found what is really important to me in my life. Last semester I took classes that were challenging yet interesting. I earned a 3.9 grade point average and hope to continue this throughout the semesters to come. As a biology major I have already heard of so many amazing research and internship opportunities and I cannot wait to branch out even more and try these within the next few years. Also in my time here, I have realized how very important my family is to me. My family has always been extremely close and unfortunately my parents and sister moved to St.Thomas from Indianapolis this past summer. I always thought I was independent and though I am fully capable of taking care of myself while at school I have realized how very important the relationship with my family really is to me. I know that when I graduate I want to be much closer to my family!

While viewed by many as "the glory days," my college experience has been so much more that a marathon of crazy nights. As a senior, I can confidently look back upon the past four years with the knowledge that I am a better version of me than the first day of freshman year. College is about growing up, making mistakes (both big and small), passionately pursuing a goal, making new friends that will last a life time, learning how to be productive, living with roommates, falling in love, mending broken hearts, exploring a new part of the counrty or even world, becoming addicted to lattes, experiencing my first snow day, opening my mind, expanding my horizons, taking a ballroom dance class, playing in an orchestra, pulling all-nighters studying for finals, living it up on the weekends, collaborationg with classmates to present a project, and soaking in the beauty of campus in the fall. But most importantly, my college experience has been about discovery of the individual I desire to become, and gaining the knowledge and confidence that will allow me to not only follow, but live out my dreams.

College has help me develop as a person. I feel more independent and I feel like I will be able to be successful later in life. I have met so many new people and been exposed to many new things that I would not have had I not gone to college.

Cristina

I have gotten resposability skills that i will definitely need in the future. I have learned to do things for myself and to not depend on too much on other people. To use my time wisely and to always stay on top of things.

The college experience has been most valuable to me in terms of protection. While attending a vocational school I learned and will shortly recieve my license to become a Nail Technician. With a Nail Technician license I have the protection of knowing I will never have to solely be out of a job. It remains valuable to me for the support as well, this license will show me hard work can acomplish great goals in life all you have to do is focus and maintain an inspiration for what you are striving to achieve.

To be an adult and maturing is what I have gotten out of my college experience so far. My parents may have been supportive but attending and striving are aspects I have done completely on my own. Day by day is how I take my new adventure and there are many more lessons to be learned as I continue my education. Attending college tends to be held very valueable for myself simply because I would love for my children to have more than what I did when I was younger. I have been a fan to take your parents advise and try to simply "do better" or "succeed". Above all I would enjoy to see my kids succeed more than myself.

College has been an overall great experience for me personally. I have learned how to manage money and live successfully on my own. College has made me a very responsible person in every part of my life. I have meet people from all over the United States who have became my closest friends. While at IU I have discovered new professional goals and completed classes and an internship as steps in completing my goal of working in Cardiopulmonary Rehab at a hospital in the years to come. In the past 2 and half years I have discovered a lot about myself and who I want to be. The top 3 things I have gotten from being here are a strong work ethic, great social, academic, community service & professional opportunities, and life skills all of which will stay with me and continue to help me succeed in the future. I am very confident that the things I am learning will lead to my success in improving the quality of life of the patients I work with in the future years.

I enrolled at JDCC as a new student for the fall semester 2010. So far, my experience with the college and its culture has been positive. It is encouraging to meet with other students who are in the same boat and realize that, for the most part, we have chosen this academic ball and chain as a method of improving our lot in life and are striving for a common goal, regardless of the cost. It has been valuable to attend college because education is the key that will open doors and make dreams come true. My dream job, and I believe it will be attainable, is to become a registered nurse and work in surgery. This thought first entered into my mind when I was living in Myanmar, SE Asia and working with Burmese children who were born with cleft lip. My mission is to enjoy a rewarding life of service, first of all to my wife and family as well as to others with whom I work with and encounter. Through careful time and priority management, I hope to realize this goal as I pursue a career in nursing.
