In terms of style and personality type, I think our school has diversified a great deal since I was reading guide books. There are a lot more students exhibiting alternative styles of dress, and an increasing presence of a gay community on campus, which is great. Although visiting Conn may make it appear that kegs are the only weekend plan, there are a lot of students on campus doing different activities--hanging out in New London at coffee shops and bars, having gatherings in dorm room, having dinner parties, etc. I must say that the majority of people here (I guess girls specifically) are pretty much beautiful, and everyone always seems to be working out or about to go work out.

no, while we may be mostly white, the student body has varying opinions and ideas, and are all very different from one-another.

For the most part, no. Conn tends to be a very liberal campus with low emphasis on athletics. There are no Greek organizations, and no secret societies. Students tend to be very open-minded and social-justice oriented. Conn has a much lower percentage of students coming in from private high schools than other colleges in the NESCAC Conference, which brings a more "normal" atmosphere to the campus. Also, the college has made it a priority to focus on increasing financial aid, which has also made the campus atmosphere more well-rounded.

In life, I have rarely found a stereotype that is absolutely and completely inaccurate. However, I do believe that the majority of students are hard-working and many--such as myself--do not come from particularly wealthy backgrounds. Many students have enjoyed comfortable homes and living situations all their lives, but few come from the extravagance that I find can be associated with Conn.

I've been suprised by the accuracy of the first two. It is a very preppy school, especially to someone who is not from the east coast. I don't agree with the impression of Conn being a country club, though. The school is very beautiful but I work hard and it isn't just an easy ride.

The first stereotype, Conn has no diversity, is not entirely accurate. True, the student body is predominantly white, but there does exist some racial and international diversity on campus. Obviously, Conn does not possess the same amount of diversity as can be found at an institution in a larger city but for a small, liberal arts school, it is not doing too badly. Diversity is abundant though in other areas, such as in academic and extracurricular interests.
The second stereotype, that Conn's student body is extremely wealthy on the whole, is extremely inaccurate. Many students are actively involved with the work study program here at Conn. Yes, some are well-off, but its like that at every other school.

Like all stereotypes, it came from somewhere. If you look around the Connecticut College campus you will see the preppy look, but it is not nearly as pervasive as people think. Though there is a good amount of wealth on this campus, many of my friends are on financial aid. And, for the record, I?ve never popped my collar.

For some of the population, but I dont think the majority. While we are predominantly a white campus, people come from all kinds of backgrounds and have very different roots. I would say that half of my friends are involved in work study and have obtained various scholarships in order to pay for the ever escalating tuition. While Conn students are known for their ability to drink hard, they also are hard workers too. Party nights are generally regulated to the weekends, with Tuesday nights at the bar being big for seniors and juniors, and the weekdays are spent in the library.
