So back in October 2020, Doane’s president recommended this counseling program close. There are so many issues Doane has from deep within their counseling curriculum and hired staff that it could be compared to a rotting apple that looks okay, until you actually bite into it. This program is all talk; shallow education; grad students really have no idea just how poorly this school is doing compared to other counseling grad schools who actually prepare their students to be clinicians. Additionally, someone should explain to their counseling graduates (before they graduate) that they are not receiving degrees in psychology, nor are they “independent” with respect to their counseling licenses, until they have documented 1,500 hours with clients who experience severe/persistent mental illness. Grads advertise their earned Doane MA’s all sorts of ways online, to make their degrees sound better than they actually are. This school is not CACREP accredited, so if a person wished to continue on with their studies after graduation, no decent school can actually accept them. This is a program that does not adequately prepare its students to treat clients, independent of their internship site experiences. Faculty have no interest in the opinions or experiences of their students, unless they are in complete agreement with hired staff. Any student questions regarding why courses entirely miss critically needed topics and skills result in an eventual targeting of the students who wish for the program to be better; to actually embody what it advertises. Most students in the Doane counseling program cannot get through in any less than 4 years, due to the way they set up their internship. You must complete 1,000 clinical hours, to other grad school’s 700. I transferred (well more than halfway through) to a CACREP counseling program in the same state and—even with much more rigorous academics—completed my degree in 2 years and a term, with a 4.0 (and my sanity).

Seems like a decent college and has nice campus. I am taking an online course thru the Learning Academy. And have the special education for students with disabilities that is easy to access, along with any other councilors that might need help from.

Cortni Hansen - 03/06/2017

I attend the Lincoln campus, and so far I love it. I did give low stars on housing & campus food, because there isn't any that I know of. The only issue I have had is with their financial aid assistant Mary. She is very slow at getting back to me, and doesn't do face to face meetings. College is a great expense it would be wonderful to have a nice financial aid assistant to help me, and other students.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Being an adult learner and knowing the importance of an education, knowing the financial strain that my family is enduring at this stage of my life for me to return to school, I would tell myself or anyone that they have no idea how important an education is at that particular point in their life and they need to apply all of their efforts to their education and that the random experiances of college life are something that they can do down the road. I would tell myself that completing my education when I got out of high school and not having all of the other responsibilities that come with adult life is much easier when you are able to concentrate all of your efforts toward school and not all the other life activities. Although I have been very successful with my educational endevors since I have returned to school, I would have done very well the firt time I was in college if I would have applied myself and had my priorities in line.

  3. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I brag that it is a four year liberal arts school that maintains small class sizes and individual attention to the students it is providing for. The school has a great deal of flexabilty in the scheduling process for classes which allows students the opportunity to get their education. This school also provides continuing education in a Masters program that I have chosen which are also very accomadating to the student population.

  8. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I have no regrets about attending Doane College in Lincoln. The faculty is outstanding and easily accessible. I was also able to work full-time and attend classes at night providing for a great way to pay for the necessary things in life. Plus, Doane also provided the opportunity for me to get accepted to a prestigous out of state grad school. Something some other school may not have accomplished.
