Why West Virginia State University is the Hidden Gem You Didn’t Know You Needed If you’re thinking about college in the heart of Appalachia, look no further than West Virginia State University (WVSU)—where education meets community and adventure! Nestled in the scenic town of Institute, WVSU offers a perfect balance of academic rigor, small-town charm, and just the right amount of quirkiness to keep things interesting. For potential students from out of state: prepare to fall in love with the stunning mountain views and the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Seriously, strangers here wave at you like they’ve known you for years! WVSU’s small class sizes mean you’ll never feel like just a number. Professors know your name, your major, and probably what you had for breakfast—it’s that personal. For locals, WVSU isn’t just a school; it’s a community hub. Whether you’re starting fresh or returning to school, you’ll find incredible support from faculty, staff, and classmates. And let’s not forget the “Yellow Jackets” pride—it’s contagious. There’s something special about being part of a school that roots for you, both on and off the field. WVSU also offers endless opportunities to get involved. Clubs? Check. Intramurals? Double check. Volunteering and cultural events? You bet! Plus, the campus is just a short drive from Charleston’s city vibes if you’re craving some urban flair. In summary: WVSU is big enough to provide a world-class education but small enough to feel like family. Come for the degree, stay for the experience—and the view isn’t bad either!

West Virginia State University was the college that I chose to transfer into after my freshman year of college to complete my undergraduate degree. A couple of the initial things that drew me to this school were the ease of access to all of the resources that were available for students (such as special library hours, private study rooms, commuter meal plans and online class as an option) as well as the scenery. It is an absolutely gorgeous campus. I did have friends who were current students when I transferred as well, so they along with the friends and acquaintances that they themselves had made, made themselves readily available to assist me during my transition. I was not familiar being shown that level of kindness from people whom I didn’t even know which further enhances my experience and initially put me at ease. Along with the social help of my friends and acquaintances, my adviser and all of my professors that I had encountered were also always willing to make themselves available for me if I had questions or if I was even just concerned about anything. Some even went so far as to hold courses labeled “independent study” just to ensure that I would not be held from my graduation date when scheduling conflicts arose. This created a very supportive environment for me and made me feel as though if I were to fail, I would have to go out of my way to try and do so. Which, of course, was never the plan and that never happened. I recommend West Virginia State University to anyone who is considering an undergraduate degree.

West Virginia State University is a wonderful college. It was one of the first colleges I applied to, the process was quick and easy. Those who work in the office are kind and generous and will help in any way they can. Overall, the students and staff are great and so is the community.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Several thoughts enter the mind, while thinking of my senior year. I felt I was not ready attend college and would certainly fail most, if not all, of my classes. Two items sustained my attention during that year, that invovled college. The first, was wether I wanted to attend college and the cost college. With the diverse experience I have obatined attending West Virginia State University, I would explain to myself that college is in fact easier than high school. In high school you worry about your social status and finding a significant other. In college , the professor does not judge you as many high school teachers do. They judge fair and will not fail you; if they see you are trying your best and turn in your work on time. Also, in high school you have abundant help applying for finical aid; you have teachers that can and will help you with scholarships, essays, applications and finding the right school. After the college experience I obtained, I would be more than capable of explaining and persuading myself to attend college immediately after high school. After all, obatining a earlier start on changing the world would only render many benefits.
