Tidewater Community College provides plenty of different classes to take for a variety of different degree paths weather you want to take classes in person or online, but TCC is a college that's generally better for students that are unsure of what they want to study or for students who intend to transfer to a four year college after doing general studies. I enjoyed my time at TCC and my professors were generally pretty helpful but there wasn't much of a community on campus. There are several TCC campuses spread through out Virginia, so certain classes would be much more out of the way depending on where you lived and that lead me to not taking a lot classes aligned with my interests and instead just doing required general studies leading me to not being very interested in the classes I was taking. I am glad I went to TCC for my general studies since it would have been more expensive otherwise but I do wish I had more opportunities to take more interesting classes offered elsewhere.

I believe TCC has prepared first time college students for Universities. Going to a community college first has saved me thousands of dollars. I was able to receive an Associates degree in Science and also my pharmacy technician license without having to receive school loans!!

Community college is a great option for high school seniors and just about anyone who wants to earn a degree. Compared to public and private universities, community college is a lot more affordable. Some great things about Tidewater Community College are the campus security, class size, professors, commute, and flexibility. TCC has blue light emergency stands located in multiple places on campus. These are great for lighting in the dark and if a student needs help, there is a button that alerts campus security. I personally prefer smaller class sizes because it allows for more class involvement and better relationships with classmates and professors. I have loved all of my professors at TCC. Most professors use office hours to meet with students, but I have found that coming to class early or staying after is a great way to discuss concerns with your professor. I have had great interactions with all of my professors in person and through email. Hampton Roads has four TCC campuses, so no matter where you are located in Hampton Roads, the commute to fairly easy. TCC offers both online and in-person classes for almost all courses, so if you have a busy schedule and can't be in person, you can still earn your degree completely online.

I think the college is ok if you want to get your degree quick and easy. But if you want professors and counselors to be hands on with your learning it definitely isn’t the best. The counselors will try to make you give up what you’re passionate about because they don’t believe in you. I would recommend rate my professor before signing up for classes.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I am so glad to go to college to get my education because that's the teaching from the prophet of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. Now I realize how important to study for I can make my country and family better. The reasons why I mention about this situation are 1. The knowledge at the college is deeper and wider than in a high school, and it can explore your mind and thought. 2. The way you pursue the knowledge from the books and the professors will make your attitude and sight different so whatever you will do in the future will be more sufficient and more successful. 3. The relationship with everyone surrounded you will be closer because you guys are pursuing your dreams together. 4. You will get more chances to have a good job. I am happy to have a chance to get a higher education in my life and I know it will make YOUR life more vivid.

  3. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The most challenging issue facing students at Tidewater Community College is parking. I have taken classes at each of the four campuses. The Norfolk campus is based out of a heavy populated downtown area. Students are charged a flat $25 fee per semester in order to park in designed garages. The biggest problem is the distance of the garages to the instructional area. The Virginia Beach campus has an insufficient amount of parking spaces to accommodate students. The Chesapeake and Portsmouth campuses are currently under construction. The supplies needed by workers decrease the amount of spaces available to students.

  16. What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

I think that the stereotype of community college students is that we are dumb, or lazy and that we couldn't get into bigger schools. That could't be farther from the truth! Community college students are actually VERY smart. We know that it's more economically smart to take general education classes at a local college and then transfer to a uni thus saving you time and money.
