What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
Remember that the summer before you go off to college could very well be the last summer you get to have with those friends. Cherish it, and remember it for the rest of your life. As you go on to college, there are plenty of new people to meet and new things to try. Don't be afraid to step out on a limb and try something! You might like it! Take your time and try not to let the hustle and bustle of getting ready for college steal that last bit of childhood you have left. In college you will have plenty of fun, and freedom that most students didn't have while in high school. It can be overwhelming to be allowed to to whatever you want whenever you want, but take this new freedom with responsibility. Many students have let this freedom go to their head and ended up failing out of college because they didn't balance their schoolwork with their social life. It will take some getting used to, don't let it bother you too much! Take it one step at a time, and have a blast!

What is your overall opinion of this school?
I'd say football is definitely one of the best aspects of being a VT student, but there are academic and social opportunities as well that can't be found anywhere else. Virginia Tech may be too large for some people to handle, but for me it's just right! Nowadays, when I tell people I go to VT, it's inevitable to hear a comment about April 16th. That's no fun, but I wouldn't trade my experiences here for anything. When on campus, I spend most of my time either walking to or sitting in class. Occasionally I hang in the library between classes to study. It's most definitely a college town! If you can't hang in one, I wouldn't recommend Blacksburg. The school pride is absolutely of epic proportions!

What are the academics like at your school?
For the most part, if you put in the effort your professors will know your name. My classes are mainly larger (200-300 students), so the professors don't have as much interaction with the students, but in my smaller classes, my professors definitely know my name and everyone else's too! The most unique class I've ever taken was probable Philosophy: Existetialism, War, and Terrorism. It was a good one!

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
I'd say greek life and intramural sports are very popular at VT. I played intramural co-ed soccer for a few years, and it was awesome! In most dorm halls, the doors are left open. People are very friendly and sociable here.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
My school experiences Antarctica weather. It gets below freezing in the winters with high wind chills. Luckily Virginia Tech buildings are close by to each other that it is still bearable to go to class.

What's unique about your campus?
The best thing about my school is the school spirit. Everyone including myslef who goes to that school is proud to say they go there or in my case graduated from there; and even everything that has happened there students and alumni are still proud to wear the colors (maroon and orange) and proud to say that they are Hokies.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
To be honest, I was slightly scared to go to college because I was not sure how well I would be able to interact and socialize with the others around me. The truth is, Virginia Tech is a great place to be and I have more friends than I had ever imagined. We form study groups on the week nights to study and work on upcoming classes, but we also have plenty of time to do all of the other activities on campus. I play soccer there and I still find time to do everything else. You really should go!

What kind of person should attend this school?
Someone that is strongly interested in math, science, or technology should consider coming here. We have a great engineering program that teaches you a lot and their are many opportunities to get paid internsips. However, they will tell you that your classes will be hard and they will be throughout the entire time that you are here. You wont be able to go out as much as your other friends that may be in different majors but you must remember the harder you work now the more it will pay off in the future.

Virginia Tech is not only a school of great academics and flourishing research, but also a place filled with the most school spirit ever. Home of the Hokie Bird, in the heart of Blacksburg, VA, each and everyday walking around campus one can see countless people doting the ?Chicago maroon and burnt orange? colors. From ?Enter the Sandman? jumping at football games, to the gobbling of the Hokie, this immeasurable amount of spirit held by students, faculty, alumni, families and many more shows the true love for this university and how great of a place Virginia Tech is.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
One of my favorite things about this school is that it is big enough that there is no stereotype. If you want Greek life, there are fraternities and sororities abound. But that by no means implies that Greek life is the only life, as it is at some other schools. If you are more interested in intramural sports or other interest groups we have a club or team to satisfy you. People from a multitude of different backgrounds, with as many interests as you can name come to Virginia Tech because, no matter what, they fit in.

What are your classes like?
A lot of people are hesitant about attending Tech because of its size; it intimidates them; they feel as though they’ll be lost in the crowd. Tech’s size can’t be disputed. It is a big school. However, that works to its advantage. Yes, some of the core/lower level classes are large. But once you get into major-specific courses or upper level courses, the classroom size becomes smaller and the teaching becomes student-specific. For example: the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS). Within the college, each major forms around the student’s needs because—though Virginia Tech as a university is large—each major is small and tight-knit. The students have wonderful opportunities to work with Professors on research outside or inside the classroom. In this way, students get the feel of a small college within the setting of a large university—that’s Tech’s biggest advantage.
