April 22nd is Earth Day, but it isn’t the only day dedicated to celebrating our planet. Here are a few others:
March 22: World Water Day
This day is all about celebrating water and raising awareness of the global water crisis. Events are held around the world to highlight water conservation efforts and raise money for clean water initiatives.
April 18: International Migratory Bird Day
This day is devoted to celebrating the amazing journey that birds make every year. It’s also a day to raise awareness about the threats that birds face, such as habitat loss and climate change.
May 3: World Wildlife Day
This day is all about celebrating the world’s wild animals and raising awareness about the threats they face. This includes endangered species like tigers, elephants, and rhinos.
May 22: International Day for Biological Diversity
This day celebrates the amazing diversity of life on Earth and raises awareness of the importance of conservation. Events include exhibitions, symposiums, and educational activities for both adults and children.
June 5: World Environment Day
This day is focused on taking action to protect our environment. This can include things like reducing our carbon footprint, recycling, and using less water.
June 8: World Oceans Day
This day is dedicated to celebrating the world’s oceans and raising awareness of the threats they face, such as pollution and climate change. Events include beach cleanups, marine life releases, and educational seminars.
How to Celebrate Earth Day
One of the goals of Earth day is to encourage people to reduce their carbon footprint. 1. One Earth Award – The One Earth Award offers $1,000 scholarships to students whose works address the pressing issue of human-caused climate change. To apply, submit your work to any category in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. At the end of your application, opt in to the One Earth Award. You will be prompted to include a personal statement on your work. Four $1,000 scholarships offered. Deadline: December 22.
2. Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship for Conservation Horticulture – This grant is available for a graduate student studying biology, horticulture, or a related field to conduct research on a rare or endangered U.S. plant. Preference is given to students focusing on the endangered flora of the Carolinas or southeastern United States. One award valued between $1,000 and $4,500 will be offered. Deadline: January 31.
3. Bryant L. Bench Carollo Engineers Scholarship – This award is for U.S. graduate students who are pursuing a career related to the water industry with a focus on energy use, sustainability, and other environmental issues. One $10,000 award will be offered. Deadline: January 20.
4. Eco-Friendly Scholarship – The scholarship program is available to undergraduate, graduate, and law school students as well as incoming college freshmen at an accredited institution in the United States. The candidate must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA. One scholarship valued at $500 will be awarded. Deadline: December 31.
5. Shinesolar.com Scholarship – This scholarship will award $2,000 to a student who is interested in one of the following: Renewable Energy, Sustainable Energy, Alternative Fuel Resources, Conservation, Renewable Energy Finance, or other general energy market topics. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA or higher. Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Deadline: September 15.
6. Donald A. Williams Soil Conservation Scholarship – This award is for U.S. and Canadian undergraduate students who have been a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Society for one year or more. The applicant must be currently employed by a natural resource conservation endeavor and pursuing a conservation-related field. Up to a $1,000 award offered annually. Deadline: March 16.
7. Melville H. Cohee Student Leader Conservation Scholarship – This award is for U.S. undergraduate students who have been a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Society for one year or more. The applicant must not a family member of the Professional Development Committee; pursuing graduate level studies in a natural resource field. Up to a $500 award offered annually. Deadline: March 16.
8. National Military Fish and Wildlife Association – The National Military Fish and Wildlife Association has established a scholarship program to assist in financing higher education for students studying natural resources management. Two awards of $500 each will be offered. Deadline: June 30.
9. Water Safety Scholarship – In order to apply for The Domnick Cunningham & Whalen Water Safety Scholarship, students must meet the following eligibility requirements. Students must be presently pursuing studies at an accredited community college, junior college, undergraduate or graduate school situated within the United States. The award is also open to those who hold GEDs and high school graduates whose college programs are set to commence before the scholarship deadline. All applicants must provide proof of good standing from their current educational institution. For the purposes of our scholarship award, this will consist of no less than a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. One award of $1,000 will be offered. Deadline: October 31.
10. Outdoors Enthusiast Scholarship – Elk Mountain Tents are looking for a stellar individual with an appreciation for the great outdoors who captures the adventurous spirit that has come to embody the Elk Mountain Tents brand. If that sounds like you, please apply! One award of $500 will be awarded. Deadline: June 30.
11. Joan K. and Rachel M. Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany – This award is available for undergraduate and graduate students in a master’s degree program who intend to study field botany during the summer semester. Preference is given to undergraduates. Up to a $3,500 award offered annually. Deadline: February 1.
12. Vermont Lakes and Ponds Scholarship – This scholarship is open to Vermont undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking a degree in environmental studies; preference is given to students seeking a degree in an aquatic environmental studies field, such as watershed management, water resources education, and/or limnology. Students must demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement and/or service. One award of $500 offered. Deadline: February 11.
13. Nichols Family Scholarship (Agriculture and Environmental Science) – This scholarship is for Vermont undergraduate students who are seeking a degree in agriculture or environmental studies. Students must demonstrate financial need. Two awards of $6,250 offered. Deadline: February 11.
14. Nokian Tyres Scholarship – Nokian Tyres will award two (2) $2,500 scholarships to current seniors of Rhea County High School. Eligible applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be planning to study in a STEM field and have a passion for environmental sustainability. Deadline: March 31.
15. Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award in Meteorology – This award is open to U.S. undergraduate students who submit an original paper concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences. Students must be pursuing a degree at a U.S. institution. One award of $1,000 will be offered. The recipient will also be given partial travel support to the AMS Annual Meeting. Deadline: June 10.
