Looking back at my time in college, I can honestly say that there are many things I regret not experiencing. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hide away in a dorm room or spend every waking moment studying in the library, but I wasn’t exactly pushing myself to try new things either. Early on, I settled into a routine of attending classes, eating lunch in the quad and spending my evenings working on assignments. Since I lived close to home, my weekends were often filled with visits to my family or catching up with old friends. I rarely stayed on campus, unless I was in class or working on a group project.
What I realize now is that there was another world literally footsteps away that I was oblivious to during my time on campus. I often wonder how my life would have changed had I ventured out of my comfort zone and really embraced everything my college had to offer. But as they say, hindsight is everything and I cannot change the past. For those of you preparing to go to college soon, or even those of you who may have a few years left, know this – college goes by in the blink of an eye. My suggestion is to sit down right now and create a list of things you want to try, so you don’t miss a thing. If I could do it all again, here’s what my college bucket list would include:
1. Create the most amazing dorm room ever!
2. Audition for a play, skit or campus talent show.
3. Attend at least one game for every sport played on campus.
4. Ask out the hottest guy on campus.
5. Join several campus clubs.
6. Attend one or more free activities on campus every week.
7. Study abroad – I always wanted to go to Africa.
8. Take a summer road trip with new friends.
9. Explore the nature trails around campus.
10. Take a random course that has nothing to do with my major.
11. Use the student fitness center and pool.
12. Become a Campus Ambassador.
13. Rush a sorority (I should have been a Zeta Tau Alpha!)
14. Attend a party in every hall on campus.
15. Wear my school colors and attend a football game at a rival school.
16. Spend spring break away from home.
17. Room with an international student.
18. Learn how to use more online tools for group projects.
19. Attend a student art show.
20. Stop by and say ‘thank you’ to all my professors before graduating.
Now it’s your turn. Let me know what you would include on your college bucket list or what’s missing on mine.
