I genuinely like Upper Iowa, but if I had been allowed to choose to go to another school knowing what this school was like, I wouldn't have chosen to go here. I came here to play womens soccer and the overall experience is a 6/10. I am very far from home so that is a very big toll. The cafeteria food isnt bad.. its just the same things every week. They switch it up here and there. The classes are pretty easy (freshman classes). The teachers are very helpful.

Brandon - 06/18/2020

Upper Iowa University is an overall good institution with plenty of opportunities to help people become more educated and helps to prepare them for professional work. I would definitely recommend this university to others, whether it's the main campus in Fayette, Iowa or the centers across the nation, or even online.

I love Upper Iowa university, It's a small school with a huge personality. It's very small so you know everyone, which is nice and everyone is close. Athletics is huge for us. about 80 percent of the students are athletes and we all get along very well.

It's a great college!

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back and tell my "high school self," what the transition what like I would tell her not to scared, there are a lot of people on staff that are their to guide you through and on to the right track, you do not have to feel like you are alone just because you're not close to your family. I would say to get involved, there are a lot of great and fun programs to help you meet people and keep you from getting homesick as well as to help with homework if need be. I would also tell myself to go to Upper Iowa University.

  4. What kind of person should attend this school?

Somone who likes to focus more on what they are doing. The two-class-a-term program allows for a lot of focus on the specific subject. Also, someone who likes the small town setting will thrive at this school. Classes are small, allowing the student to form bonds with classmates and professors. It is hard to walk around campus and not see someone that you know or recognize.

  5. What kind of person should not attend this school?

Anyone who has to have a McDonalds or Wal-Mart nearby should not attempt to come here. Anyone who loves the city should not attend this school. The nearest Wal-Mart is forty minutes away, and there are only a little over 900 students on campus. Our school makes up the majority of the population here in Fayette, Iowa. It may also be hard for someone to come here who isn't okay with different cultures and backgrounds as we have a large group of students from foreign countries such as Nepal.

  7. What's unique about your campus?

I think the best things about our school are the Education Program and Art building. Education is the one field on this campus that I believe truly pushes students to go beyond and to try to be the best they can be. The teachers there have really helped to push me to be a better student and be a well organized individual. The Art building is one of the best I've seen compared to others I've visited. The building is new with all new equipment inside and a great senior studio. I wouldn't have last without them.

  8. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Well, first of all, I wish I knew the cost of a good education. The tuition for just one class is $975.00! That does not even include text books. In addition, I truly wish that I had made more of an effort to seek scholarships. I have taken out student loans in order to pay for classes, for the most part, because I am married with three children and I have to work. I cannot afford to pay for classes out of pocket. My wife is also working on her Masters degree, so we are streched very thin financially.

  10. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about this school would be the distance from larger cities and from shopping centers. We have a large variety of things offered either through the school or in town, but some objects you are only able to find in larger areas. In most cases to get to these areas, it is at least a half an hour drive, more in other cases.
