The academics are good from what I have heard. However, I do not know from experience just yet. (fall 2015)

There is a variety of interesting courses and programs. The deans and heads of departments are accommodating if one wishes to follow a rare program.

Academics at my school vary from department to department. For instance, in the Belk Business college, a majority of classes are very large and therefore the professors do not usually know each student on a first-name basis. On the other hand, the Japanese department is a very tight-knit group in which each student knows each professor in the department personally. The students and teachers meet often outside of class for extracurricular events related to Japanese language and culture. Students at my school spend a great deal of time studying. On any given day, one can walk into the library to find it crowded with students quietly doing their work. I have always been under the impression that my classmates, for the most part, are very concerned with their studies and want to do well. Class participation is largely encouraged in my smaller classes, but limited in larger classes. Students at my school seem more interested in helping each other succeed than in competing, which works out splendidly because everyone benefits that way. Outside of class, most students I come across are having conversations about topics related to class or at least intellectually stimulating conversation.

I would say that there is a mixture of good and bad professors. I have had some of the best professors whom were extremely knowledgable of the subject they were teaching and were amazing at teaching it to us, and I have also had a few professors that were absolutely horrible. I did not learn anything at all, and I felt as though my professor did not know what he was teaching and/or how to teach it. As for the students, in my opinion, UNC Charlotte has some of the most brilliant students ever. I seem to always find myself surrounded by very intelligent students and it only makes me want to learn even more.

Professors are very engaging even in big classes, almost all my professors know me by name and can identify me in class. My favorite class is my Geology 1200 Lab, it is very easy and the teacher is very relaxed and makes sure everyone understands the material. My least favorite class is my Liberal Studies class at eight in the morning, simply because it is a eight in the morning. Students are at the library often and it can be hard to find an open computer sometimes. Class participation is high as people are usually interested in the subject matter, because the professors make the course as interesting as possible. Students are not competitive to my knowledge, they are actually very supportive and will offer help to you if you ask for it. I am currently an undecided major, but plan to go into Pre-Business and eventually a marketing major with a minor in finance. Charlotte is the second biggest banking city in the United States behind New York and any Business major is very strong here. The education at this school is conducive towards a legitimate career, most majors here are very strong and compare favorably to other schools.

The academics are a major aspect of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As a freshman and sophomore the classes can be quite large including the liberal studies, psychology, sociology, and some math classes. Other classes can be small including english and some math classes. In the smaller classes the teachers do know your name, and in the larger classes it is harder but they do learn faces. Once you are accepted into your major, the classes are generally smaller and you receive a more personal relationship with the faculty within the major. I am in Nursing School at UNCC and I love it. It is very competetive, as all nursing programs are. I have spents countless hours of studying and making high grades as a freshman and a sophomore to be accepted into Nursing School and have spent even more time studying to stay in Nursing School as a junior and a senior. The faculty in the Nursing program are wonderful and I have gotten to know some of them on a personal level. I do feel Charlotte helps each student succeed and offers many resources such as the writing center, the career center which holds trial interviews and career fairs!

Class participation is more common among the classes that that take role, but even in the ones that don't most people still tend to go because you will do better in a class if you take notes. Professors will only know your name depending on various factors, for example if you tend to sit in the front row and pay attention/ take notes professors will know who you are better than if you sit in the back, of course the size of the class also factors because if its a large it will be harder for a professor to learn everyone's name. How much students study vary on their major and how dedicated they are to their studies, engineers for example study a lot more than most other majors since they have to take classes like Calc 3 and physics but some students might also study more than their peers and thus have better grades. I am an International Business major and so far I have had many different classes since I am taking mostly general ED classes right now but I am also taking business classes and foreign language classes since I am taking International Business. I haven't really spent that much time with professors outside of class but they all offer office hours were you can just walk-in and they will help with any questions you might have.
