I really love the home town feeling. The University is small, which means in the classrooms you are more than just a number, the teachers are available and helpful and so is the academic advising staff. Registrar, Financial Aid, and Student Accounts all answer any questions you might have. While the housing is kept as nice as possible the staff could enforce their own policies now and then. The Juneau campus is set up near the classrooms, science building and Rec Center, making it easy to walk-no car needed. Overall Juneau is a beautiful place and the campus sitting on a lake makes for a beautiful scenery.

I think that it is a great local option. However, I would not have come here if I was not already living near the university. There are not many things to do at the university or in Juneau. I am going to be transferring hopefully in the next year and I hope that I will get more opportunity at another university.

The University of Alaska Southeast is a very tight nit community, which is an extremely good thing. The campus is small but that just means that there is more one on one time to meet with classmates, professors and advisers. It is hard to not know everyones name while going to this school. Professors, advisers and other staff really show that they care and do their best to help you with any of your troubles.

This University is a perfect fit for me- amazing facilities, professors who actually care and invest in their students, fun activities. I love everything about this University, and would recommend it to students who want a more hands-on education, access to outdoor activities, and a close community.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

    Stay in school! Stay the course! Don't get knocked up/impregnate anyone else until you are absolutely sure that you are not college material because it takes a lifetime to finish once you have kids of your own. Try everything at least once, but don't be stupid about it. Do your homework. Get involved in clubs and volunteering. Study hard. Contribute in class. Help your fellow students to gain confidence. It will come back to you in spades. Most valuable advice: Transfering between institutions NEVER works out to your advantage, so make sure you find a school that you can live with before you assume the debt to go there!

  4. What kind of person should not attend this school?

    University of Alaska Southeast is an outstanding school with numerous programs available for students with different interests however, considering the small population of the University’s home town, Juneau, the campus is fit for people who need a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy the homebody feeling that the town and school have to offer. A person who prefers action or big city feel may not be fit for the small town campus. Faces become quite familiar walking through the halls and for someone who likes adventures, population, and new sights, they may start to feel enclosed as the year progresses.

  5. What's unique about your campus?

    I love the smaller classes, and how the teachers get really one on one with you. All of the classes are very accessable and close by. Dorms are nice and comfortable too.

  6. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

    Probably that it's kinda small, and since it's small there aren't as large a variety of classes available as at larger schools. A lot of locals go here too, so they go home after classes, that makes campus life somewhat slim sometimes.

  7. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

    I chose UAS because it offered a Tlingit language program. Tlingit is the indigenous language of the Native people in Southeast, Alaska. The university is very diverse-aware and culturally oriented. I chose it because it is close to home (I'm from Southeast Alaska). Coming from a small town UAS is the perfect size for me. Rural students can truly excel at UAS.

  8. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

    They offer all types of degrees and certificates here. There are alot of each kind of student alot of Biology and Marine Biology majors as well as miner training and desiel training.

  9. What kind of person should attend this school?

    People who want to get out of the city, see nature, meet free spirits, and interact with the professors so that it's not too big of a drag to get through your classes. Must be able to deal with snow, and rain, and darkness. It's worth it.

    They are so nice here. And it is beautiful! Campus is the perfect size, teachers are really nice and easy going. I would highly reccommend this school to anyone!

  11. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

    I wish that I knew how close the University community is, knowing that the school was in a small town I had an idea but when the first day of school came around the people that have been running the summer events were almost in every class I am in. Teachers take classes with students, in fact one of my teachers is in a class me. I see teachers and students at my job almost everyday. If you go to the University of Alaska Southeast you will see everyone almost every day.

  12. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

    The most frustrating thing about The University of Alaska Southeast is finding a parking spot. With the many students that live off campus most of the students drive, with the students leaving and coming back its like a marry-go-round with cars. People waiting in line just to get a good paring spot, backing up traffic for other students. Many people like to wait to get a parking spot closer to the building holding other students that will park in the back. Everyone has said that we need a bigger parking.

All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA. Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
