What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I would tell myself to open up to new people, get involved in as many activities as possible and to stop worrying so much about how other people view me. I would tell myself that it is okay to make new best friends besides the ones i went to high school with. I would also remind myself that everyone is going through the same adjustment as me and there are a lot of people that could relate so I should not be afriad to talk about my feelings. Most importantly, I would tell myself that this time in my life only happens once, so I need to take advantage of all of the great opportunities college gives you and remember that learning is not just done in the classroom.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.
Loyola Marymount is a very diverse school; there are the academic scholarship students who always have their noses in textbooks, the Greek community, who is interested in partying in the name of "philathropy", the serive orginazation students who have a "holier than thou" attitude, and the rich kids who are paying 60 grand a year to drive their Ferraris and party on Daddy's dime, but the best part is that even tho all of these groups have their faults, when you walk around campus you're sure to have at least a dozen kids smile geniuley and say hello.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
The reason LMU was my first choice is because of its focus on educating the whole person which involves a large focus on social justice. I have gratefully taken advantage of this and now I serve as a peer board member of the Belles Service Organization. This university not only provides general education but also plentiful opportunities to grow socially, spiritually, and intellectually as an individual.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
I love to tell my friends about the intimacy of my university. They are usually shocked to know that most of my classes consist of 20-30 students maximum, unlike the seminar hundred student classes at most universities. They are shocked that teachers in all of my classes know me personally by name and how hands-on each class is for this reason. I take pride in this personal aspect of my school and would not trade the additional attention that LMU offers each of its students each and every day.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.
My school is known as the beautiful Catholic university on "the bluff". On one side you can see the Pacific Ocean and on the other you see the bustling city of Los Angeles. LMU is known for it's amazing basketball team in the late 1980s when star player Hank Gathers burst on the college basketball scene. During a tournament game he collapsed and died but LMU rallied and finished with a successful season. At LMU we attack obstcles with vigor and that's why I love it.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
Everyything on campus is very overpriced which can get annoying since we already pay so much money to attend. The company that provides the campus with food (Sodexo) extremely overcharges us for food and often times, our meal plans run out before the end of the year because of this.

What are the academics like at your school?
At LMU, academics can be pretty much whatever you want them to be. If you're looking to simply get acceptable grades with minimal effort, you can certainly find classes that will allow you to do that. If you want to really challenge yourself and develop intellectually, however, you can find opportunities to do that as well. For example, you could join the Honors program. Rather than merely providing harder classes in a more competitive atmosphere, the Honors program allows the school's most talented, accomplished, and popular professors to create uniquely challenging and fascinating courses. Though Honors courses can be different each time they are offered, a couple I've taken are worth mentioning. Last year in Imago Dei, a theology class, we began the semester by discussing the writing of the Old Testament, spent a month studying the evolution of primates, and finally explored the implications of artificial intelligence, which ultimately led to a field trip to the LA Zoo and the USC robotics lab. Currently I am taking an ethics class called Beyond Good and Evil, in which we use the works of Kant and other major philosophers to evaluate the status and rights of dolphins as intelligent beings. Toward the end of the semester we will also participate in a national business ethics competition. Along with these fascinating classes, the LMU Honors program also offers funding for research projects and opportunities for publication. The bottom line is that any student can reach her academic and intellectual potential at LMU.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
LMU strikes a unique balance between big and small. One of the most valuable advantages that you gain by choosing LMU over a larger school is increased access to your professors. In most departments, smaller class sizes and office hours allow you to connect with your professors and learn in a more personalized way. The student body is also more unified. However, LMU also has the resources of a major university, so the school is able to put on fun events for the student body and host renowned speakers. Bands like Third Eye Blind, Local Natives, and the Bravery have performed at CollegeFest, an annual concert held on campus. Celebrities like John Legend and Seth MacFarlane have delivered speeches during First Amendment Week. Events like these add to the vibrant student life at LMU.

Why did you decide to go to this school?
I've known I wanted to do pr in the entertainment industry, so my choices were either LA or NY. I chose LA over NY because the more I thought about it, while NY has the entertainment scene, it is more focused on fashion than entertainment. LMU is the perfect fit because it's right near LA, right near my home, and I definitely couldn't leave the great weather here.

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
Many people seem to think that LMU is full of rich, white frat guys and sorority girls. These stereotypes are not totally unfounded, but they are certainly not universally accurate either. Because of LMU's location and its high tuition, many students here are very wealthy, but many others (including me) rely on scholarships and financial aid to cover these costs. Furthermore, LMU's diversity has been steadily increasing over the past decades. I read recently that members of racial and ethnic minorities comprise 43.5{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body. And there are many student-run organizations (e.g. the Black Student Union) dedicated to promoting cultural awareness and expression on campus. Finally, LMU does have an active Greek system, but sororities and fraternities are definitely not the only pathway to a vibrant social life.

Describe the dorms.
The dorms are pretty good in general. My dorm is from the '70s, so it's on the older side, but it's still comfortable, the rooms are large, and everyone who lives there is proud to live there. A few of the dorms, including mine, have a sink in each room, which is really convenient. The newer dorms have more common areas (my dorm only has the hallway to use as common space, but we don't mind), but they also seem to have less of a sense of community. A few of the dorms also have problems with drinking, but there are definitely dorms, especially East Quad, that don't have drinking going on. A lot of people dislike having communal bathrooms, but they're really not that bad.
