What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
The advice I would give myself as a high school senior would be to learn study habits in high school. It's difficult to jump into college and not know how to study. College profesors don't go that easy on you. When you have two or three tests in one week, and you don't know how to sit down and study, you won't be able to do well on your tests. I would also tell myself to get involved. I wasn't that involved my freshman year of college, so it wasn't that enjoyable. However, now I'm starting to get more involved and it's becoming easy to make new friends. Have the confidence to go out and do things you didn't do in high school, that is the best advice I could give myself. Step outside of the box.

Describe the students at your school.
My classmates are young and older, since I got to college online there is a variety. They are friendly but I do not get to know them as well as most college students know their fellow classmates, or only way of communication is through the computer.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
I hate that our school sometimes belittles the Purdue side of campus as being not as important because we have fewer Purdue schools campared to IU schools. The reason this is bad is because it makes all the Purdue students feel like they don't matter to the school or perhaps that they attended the wrong school. To be fair they are usually good about not excluding Purdue, but with our recent logo change to the IU logo it has left Purdue students less than thrilled.

What's unique about your campus?
The atmosphere, it is so friendly and fun it is hard not to feel at home here. Almost everyone is extremely nice and open to meeting new people. I think this is important because it is great to have friends to hang out with whether it is off campus or on campus between classes. Also just the fact that you can feel comfortable here makes a huge difference with studying and relaxing.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
Before I cam to IUPUI, I wish I would have known/realized how much of a commuter campus it was. I have to leave my house rediculously early just to find a parking spot so I can make it to class on time. Also, I wish I would have known that some of the people around me were going to be rude. When I visit other schools, I walk by a student and they say, "Hi." At IUPUI, everyone is so depressed-looking.

What kind of person should not attend this school?
There is not a particular kind of person that shouldn't attend Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. However, potential students showing poor performance in high school may not be accepted without prior higher education experience. In order to serve these potential students, IUPUI has formed strong relationships with Indianapolis-based community colleges such that several courses taken at these colleges can easily be directly transferred onto an IUPUI transcript.

What kind of person should attend this school?
IUPUI would be a good fit for most people because it provides a very supportive and helpful learning environment. The people who already know what major they want to go into will receive the guidance and education that will make their goals achievable. Also, students who are unsure of what they want to focus have an opportunity to take a variety of classes that may help them decide.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
The stereotype is, because it's a commuter campus, that students who come here are all non-traditional, couldn't afford to go anywhere else, etc. Not all, but some IU students in Bloomington have this attitude that IUPUI is second-rate compared to IUB and easier to get into, and that's just not true. Our students are just as diverse, and many of them chose IUPUI for several reasons that have nothing to do with cost or 'ease of access.'

What are the academics like at your school?
I love the personal interaction between students and professors. If you are sick, your professors are so understanding, which is greatly beneficial when you're not feeling well! The one on one mentoring from faculty helps to enhance your academic career. A lot of many professors are on Facebook and other social networking sites, so you can communicate with them outside of class. So often you hear that college experiences at places like ISU or U of Indy feel like high school: this is not that experience! I am a student at Herron School of Art and Design on the IUPUI campus, and it is one of the finest art schools in the country. The building is newer and absolutely beautiful. There are galleries that are so nice inside that people within the community will stop by to visit them and view student artwork. While I love the interesting classes that I have taken, I do feel that many students (for various reasons) do not graduate from IUPUI within 4 years. The average is more like 5-7 years. People often change majors often.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
IUPUI is the best value for your college experience in the state of Indiana. You will pay considerably less than that of a private four year college while obtaining the same degree as students at Indiana or Purdue Universities. Having attended classes at both IU and IUPUI, I actually prefer the smaller classes and personal relationships I have developed with professors and fellow classmates at IUPUI. The location of the buildings are close together, making walks to and from buildings in inclement weather better than the Bloomington location. While parking can be challenging at times, that just becomes more of an incentive to go green and walk, take the free school bus or take advantage of the new downtown Indianapolis bike lanes. If you are interested in law, business or medicine, there are so many internship opportunities available near campus. While the school has a large enrollment (30,000+), the fact that many students take night classes means that the campus never feels overcrowded or overwhelming. I think that people often get the wrong idea of IUPUI: "Why didn't you just go to IU or Purdue?" I LOVE this school, and being downtown Indianapolis provides so many opportunities that one could not have anywhere else.

There are multiple activities and organizations at IUPUI including fraternities and sororities, LGBT groups, multicultural organizations, sports related clubs, and clubs that are related to students majors.

Tell us about the sports scene on campus.
There are sports held at IUPUI. Some are men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, swimming, basketball and flag football. Each sport has times they play and are posted for students to see. I have been to a basketball game for IUPUI and it is free for students to view as long as they have there JagTag (student card) with them.

What are your classes like?
My classes are mostly art related, as I am an Art History student. As a senior, I currently have a variety of classes, including 100, 300. and 400 level classes. I have a foreign language class, an online history of music class, three art history courses, and an online digital image course. I love the ease and independent structure of my online classes, and the personal interaction with professors and students in my physical on campus courses. Herron School of Art has some fabulous, fun classes, such as Abject Art (it's all about weird, gross art!), and Avant Garde video (did you know Andy Warhol made videos?) All of my classes are laid back, easy going and fun. The professors go out of their way to make learning fun and accessible for students of different learning styles.

Where is the best place to get work done on campus?
I spent my entire freshman year studying on the fourth floor of the campus library. There are quiet areas and private study carols that truly facilitate a peaceful learning environment. There are couches to sleep on if you fall asleep trying to read Plato; there are vending machines on the lower floors if you need a Red Bull energy boost, and computer areas throughout if you need to look things up or print. The location of the library is smack dab in the center of campus, so you have no excuse not to stop by on your way to one of your classes! The Herron School of Art Library is also very quiet and great for studying. There are comfortable chairs and quiet rooms with tables in the Campus Center, as well. There are tables and chairs in the Barnes and Noble Cafe in the campus center so you can drink your latte while you study, but it gets loud and chaotic around lunch. There are outdoor areas that are also nice to sit and study, or to hold study groups at.

What's the Greek scene like?
The Greek organizations are not mandatory when going to campus. They are there to help benefit you by networking, having strong relationships in the field your interested, having fun, and making an effort to strive for something in life. It is totally up to you whether you join them. I am currently in the Alpha Lamda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma organizations which are honors fraternities.
