A lot of people in the area take IVCC for granted because it is a two-year college, not a four-year university. However, this isn’t a fair description of the college because it provides way more than meets the eye! Illinois Valley Community College provides great academics, extracurriculars, and opportunities that help students improve and succeed on their journey to obtaining a degree. The teachers are all very friendly and easy to talk to whether it be about schoolwork or off-topic conversation. Since the campus is smaller than a big university, it’s easy to find your way around between classes and find good spots to study or hang out with friends. IVCC also provides a lot of extracurriculars and groups for students to join and make a difference on campus. Student government, college democrats, college republicans, gender-sexuality alliance, agriculture club, and Hispanic leadership team are all great examples, and there are dozens more clubs that I could go over! These clubs are frequently advertised around campus and work well with students’ schedules so that everybody is able to participate if they want to. One thing about IVCC that I have found really helpful is its dedication to making campus life accessible to everyone. IVCC has a Center for Accessibility and Neurodiversity, a place that you can go to if you have any issues with mental disorders or learning disabilities and need certain accommodations for your classes. The main office for it is located right on the main floor and is open every day for students. Not only does IVCC offer this, but they also have other accommodations such as loans for gas, food, or rent off-campus as well as project success. Project Success is a program that works hands-on with first-generation students, low-income students, or students with disabilities to ensure that they are able to graduate IVCC with little to no issues. I personally haven’t needed Project Success, but I do know that a lot of students on campus utilize it and are extremely thankful! Overall, Illinois Valley Community College may be in the middle of rural Illinois and not have on-campus housing like a four-year university does, but it does offer experiences and opportunities to ensure that anybody can thrive and succeed on campus and graduate with a positive outlook on their future. Their slogan is 100% true: No place so close could take you so far!

I started at IVCC in Spring of 2016, and I took some classes at the Ottawa Center which was nice. The smaller class sizes allowed for a more close knit learning environment. I enjoyed my time at IVCC and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in an Associates Degree. It is a great value.

Illinois Valley Community College is great for a variety of traditional and non-traditional students. The faculty is extremely accessible and friendly. The student population is not overwhelming and it is not difficult to find clubs and organizations to join.

Illinois Valley Community College is an incredible school for an incredible price. My experience has been extremely positive and I have met amazing people there including some professors. I can look back and say I made the right choice by going there right after high school.

    I would encourage myself to follow my dreams and not let the fear of the unknown scare me. Unfortunately I learned the hard way and took many classes toward a major I didn't even really want to do, because I was scared that becoming a nurse would be "too hard". Fortunately I figured out what I wanted to do, and hope to be accepted into the fall 2010 nursing program at my school.

  3. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

    Before I came to Illinois Valley Community College, I wish i would have known that the classroom numbers are not in order and that the girls bathroom is all the way upstairs. It is confusing trying to find your class on your first day and you often get lost and you should go to the bathroom before shool to save you time.

  4. What kind of person should not attend this school?

    I honestly believe that everyone can achieve at Illinois Valley Community College. After high school I decided to venture away from home to a University, this decision was not in my best interest contrary to my belief. At the University I attended I had a hard time received one on one help and struggled greatly in my classes due to the extensive projects assigned. I decided to come home and try something different after the first two months of being at that University. IVCC gives the help a student needs when they do not know where to begin.

    My school provides a quality education to students whether they plan to head into the real world as working adults or transfer to a university to continue their education.

    It was smaller than the other schools I considered, and due to the smaller class sizes, I believe IVCC has been a great transition for me. IVCC also offers great and free resources, such as tutoring, to students. The book rental program has saved many students, as well as myself, a lot of money. We are also able to talk and take food in the college's library.

  8. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

    The worst thing about my school would be that everyone is in a clique. From the moment you walk into the doors, you can see who everyone is. You have each high school that has flowed into the community college seperated. From each high school, then you have each high school group; for example, the art kids, the popular kids, the jocks, the nerds. If everyone could just join together, it would be a much better school.

    It is known as one of the better Community Colleges in the area. The teachers are always available during thier office hours and are willing to help with any problems you have.

  12. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

    That I am in my second year of college and still hold a 4.0 GPA, that not many of the people I know can hold that high of a GPA, and that I intend to keep that GPA at 4.0 until the day of my graduation from IVCC.

  13. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

    The most frustrating thing about my school would be the set up. There is really no given set up, you have the A, B, C, D, and E buildings but they are in no sort of order. Not to mention the parking lots which are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 but are definitly not in that order. This is an educational facility, there should be some organization in these simplicities.
