What should every freshman at Central Michigan University know before they start?

Kristen

Out of my college experience, so far, I have gotten the chance to prove that I am a responsible and hard-working student. Because I am attending Central Michigan University, I am able to prove to myself, my family, and my friends that I am intelligent and are fully equipped to take responsibility for my own life and decisions. This is also why it has been valuable to attend. I have aquired great time-management skills, and feel as though I am a pro at handling the stresses of college life.

I have gained a better sense of independance and self-reliance. This is so valuable because I like to "pawn" responsibility onto others if I become too busy. I've had to learn when to say "No, I have too much going," and when to let others step up. As I am going into teaching, I have to account for my own actions and constantly keep up a good image because so many are watching my actions. I could lose the opportunity to become a teacher if I slip up once. I've also learned through this to prioritize. I realize what is important and what is just fun. College has helped to push me closer toward the person I want to become.

So far my college experiance has been great. I have made a lot of new friends and I have learned a lot of new things. When coming to Central Michigan University I did not know that I would meet so many new friend and have so much fun while also getting a great education. It has been so valuable to attend here at Central Michigan University because the campus is the perfect size to where you can get to all of your classes by walking and there are alway people trying to help you out when you need it. We have tutors for every class and the tutors are students that excel in which ever subject you need the help in so they know where you are at because they have recently taken the class and they know what it is like. Attending Central Michigan University has been one of the most valuable things (If not the most valuable thing) that I have put my money into in my whole life.

So far out of my college experience I have gotten a good education and made friends who probably will be my friends throughout my life. I have become way more outgoing then I have ever been. I feel comfortable enough to show everyone who my true self is and they won't judge. I also feel I am growing into a stronger more independent person.

I have realized who I am. I have changed my major three times now and I really should have just taken general education classes until I decided what I really wanted to do. I have finally decided on the major that I want to do but I am kind of glad that I did try out other majors too. If I had just stayed with my first major I would probably be done with college, but I would be miserable, I am glad that I got the opportunity to change my major. I have also made a lot of life long friends.

I have gotten a whole new life. I used to think there wasn't much in the way of opportunity for me due to my disability. I felt like I might spend my whole life on SSI. I hated that thought! Going to college helped me see that with training I will be able to enter the work place at some point even though I cannot currently. I see a bright future for my little boy and I that doesn't include goverment assistance. This thought keeps me going even on the days it hurts to get out of bed. So if I were to use just one word to summarize what I've gotten out of college it would be confidence. I no longer feel "disabled" and like a burden that society will forever take care of. I've learned I'm valuable, capable and that I have something to give back.

I was in Towson University's Tiger Marching Band, or as we like to call it, the Towson University World Famous Tiger Marching Band. Being a member of this great band gave me a sense of pride. All four years of my undergraduate education I spent with the band. When I first joined in the Fall of 2006, we were just a regular ol' university marching band only making appearances at Towson's football games. Then something big happened. In the Spring of 2008 it was announced that we would be performing in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! News got around to the University and suddenly we were no longer just a university marching band. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade summed up the end of my eight-year marching band career on a high note (very high, like piccolos), with my head held high and my eyes with pride. Now, I have 200 great friends that I met through the Towson University Marching Band. However, the most amazing part is the sense of university spirit I gained by attending college which an incredibly valuable experience and a connection I will always have with my alma mater.

College has been the biggest transition for me thus far. As a freshman, I am still getting acclimated to this new lifestyle and independence. College represents a significant investment to me. Not only does it allow you to compete for your place in society but it aids you in finding yourself in the process. My education will lay down the foundation for my future endeavors. the opportunities I have been presented would have never been an option without college. I have a variety of things that I want to accomplish. Some of them include becoming the first African American woman U.S. press secretary, establishing my own PR/ Advertising firm, obtaining my law degree and masters simultaneously, becoming a CEO for a fortune 500 company, and even working as teacher at my high school to reach back. I know that achieving these goals cannot be accomplished without the proper education. College to most people is an option, but to me it is a priority. With college, I will be able to service others. College allows you to acquire knowledge, obtain insight and experience, meet diverse people from all walks of life, and to solidify your future.

Wow, when i started at Sinclair i knew nothing. I was taught about textiles, fabrics, how they react and hold up to light, fire and ware and tear, i can identify many different types of textiles as well. I was taught terms that i will use on a daily basis in the real world, and i learned how to work with a team on a project. That was something different in itself because before we were only given assignments to complete on our own. I learned how to draft by hand drawing and draft drawings on the computer in Autocad, the computer system that allow you to do so many different things quickly and efficiently. I learned all about shading, whether it was precise drawing or sketchiness projects from my teacher. I learned so much but i still have much to learn. My brain is still thirsty, and the more i learn, the more successful i will become.
