The stereotypical Brown student is smart, but overprivileged. They are politically liberal, and adopt a cause (children in Africa, Tibetian government, etc.) in order to compensate for their own privileged birth. They are non-religious or only loosely so.

Despite bringing in a multitude of people - people of distinct races, regions of the world, economic statuses, etc. - the majority does tend to be rather affluent, which isn't a bad thing, necessarily. There was always a saying that I've heard Brown students say: "Harvard students - they want to RULE the world. Brown students - they want to SAVE the world." Brown's students tend to be very active in community service and in matters that revolve around aid and help. Coincidentally, one of the more popular majors at Brown is the International Relations track, where one can focus on the field of, let's say, Global Security.

On the negative side, Brown is often referred to as the "ghetto" Ivy, or the least prestigious. Students are often stereotyped as pot smoking liberals. On the positive side, it's a well-respected school, getting into which is pretty tough. Students are well rounded and down to earth, and study a wide array of subjects. The student population is very diverse.

I've read many books that label Brown students hippies, hipsters, progressives, liberals. Also people say that it's extremely chill, and not so stressful because students can take all their classes pass/fail. People assume there's tons of parties and that it's easy and "okay" to slack off at Brown.

That there are no grades at Brown, so life must be so much easier; that all the students are tree-hugging, leftists hippies
