This school is great for self disciplined and social people. The main appeal is the connections and relationships you build there. If you're someone who relies more on structure and clear direction, you may struggle significantly to make the best use of the resources here. The programs are also very rigorous and mental and physical health are not always well supported. This makes time management and being vocal extremely important. You should stick to your values and stand up for yourself, and know that the schools' culture – which can sometimes be toxic – is very engrained and difficult to change. That said, the work ethic I developed there is something I know I wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. The facilities and shop staff are amazing and care a lot for the safety of the students. You'll have access to top notch machinery, prototyping labs, and more. Overall, there are major benefits and major pitfalls, and like anything, it should be thoroughly researched before you jump in. Ultimately, I believe this school is best for those that know exactly what they want and can self direct.

Art Center College of Design is a great school to challenge yourself creatively and intellectually. There won't be a semester that you don't excel at a certain skill or even multiple. The student work life is so vigorous at the campus and work ethics are insane in comparison to the real work life. It is definitely a great place to push yourself and plenty of portfolio pieces in such a short amount of time. The main downside to the school life at Art Center is the lack of work life balance. I find plenty of students struggling with being able to maintain a healthy social life, sleep schedule, and dietary plan. (Honestly, almost impossible to achieve all of them with such a busy schedule).

Its a beautiful school, very demanding at times overwhelming.

Sonja - 01/14/2018

The classes and the workload is intense but worth your time. The professors ask a lof out of you but also spend time and efforts making sure that you succeed. If you are dedicated to art and design and are willing to work hard and dive deep, this is the right place for you.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell myself that Industrial Design is the major that I should go directly into and not waste my time in any other field. I would counsel myself to take as many art classes as I could, be more curious, read more about what technologies are coming out, question everything, and invest in Google! I would tell myself to sell the Mustang and get that Corolla now to save money on gas. I would tell myself to not take any of my future girlfriends too seriously because they are all not the one for you. I would tell myself to cook more and not rely on fast food and restaurants so much. The most important thing I would tell myself though is to never worry because everything has a solution and that fear ruins all experiences and maybe even my success.

  8. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I knew the financial aspect of it and the difficulty one can face when they don't have enough funds. I also wish I went straight to this school after high school, instead of investing my time in another degree, but I know I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't, so I have no regrets, only financial issues.

  10. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I enjoy attending the school very much, however I think the workload is rather extreme and hectic. I like to take my time to produce quality art work and I absorb knowledge slowly but I feel that we a rather rushed and don't have the opportunity to learn at our own pace. I just wish the homework stressed quality rather than quantity.

Artistic people and creative thinkers. People that are passionate about design. People that want to change the world and how people go about their lives. Professional minded and eager to learn about design and technology. Always thinking about the future and how things can be made easier and more efficient. Innovative, thinking of other ways to use things in our daily lives. Hardworking students that are prepared to do whatever it takes to get the task finished. Effective time managers, using what time they have to effectively complete a task. Getting things done the correct way, not using short cuts.

  12. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

I wish the computer labs had assistants to help students with technical problems and problems the students are having with applications. I wish the school fostered more of a sense of community among the students and also had more tutors to help students after class. It is not always easy to contact teachers for help during the after school hours.
