What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, there are many things that I would want to say. I am 42 years old and just got my degeree in Elementary Education. I now have to do my student teaching in order to get my certification and license to teach. I began college right after high school but made some choices that lead me in other directions and now I find myself just fininshing school at this age. So I would tell myself the importance of an education and also the importance of having a job that you love and are passionate about, instead of just working to get by. When putting off your education and getting jobs that do not make you feel happy or inspired, it is hard to go to work everyday. Although I believe in doing your best at what ever you do, whether you like it or not. I would explain all these things to my young self and would hope that after that I would make a few different choices, but at the same time there is so much that I would want to keep the same.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.
Prescott College is more then a place you can earn a degree at, its a place where you are provided with all the resources and knowledge you could possibly need to achieve your goals.

What kind of person should attend this school?
It is a liberal arts schools and so only people who are very culturally and environmentally minded and who are open-minded should apply. Also, you need to be very self driven to attend this school because you play a large part in creating your own education.

A person who is not a self-starter. You have to be able to manage your time and be disciplined enough for independent study.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
Many students seem to develop a sense of superiority towards those with more traditional and/or conservative viewpoints. I'm not exactly sure where this comes from, as most teachers encourage having multiple viewpoints.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
Prescott College is built to avoid frustration. At prescott the student plays an integral role in planning their education to suite their particular goals. This fact takes the frustration out of attending college.

What's unique about your campus?
Hands-on experience. In the environmental studies program, we do actual field research, frequently spending as much or more time in the field than we do in the classroom. The same trend applies to all programs, at least to the degree to which it is applicable.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
When I tell people that I go to Prescott College, people usually ask me a lot of questions about it--mainly because most of them have never heard of it. This school really is a diamond in the rough. A small campus nestled in the heart of "Everybody's Hometown"(Prescott, Arizona), Prescott College is warm and inviting to students, faculty, alumni, and visitors alike. Beacause Prescott College stirves to graduate socially and environmentally concious students, we really try to practice what we preach. Instead of erecting new buildings, the school does its best to reclaim old ones--in fact, most of the classrooms, faculty, and administrative offices were once old business offices and houses which were purchased by the college and "recycled" into campus buildings. In the event that a new building is established, the school hires "green-builders" and utilizes sustainable practices to get the job done. Our Crossroads Center and Library are built from natural resources(rammed earth, raw-wood, free-standing dead pines, etc) and recycled building materials(from old buildings). I feel an immense amount of pride to be attending a school that actually practices what its teaching. Prescott College is anything but hypocritical.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
The only stereotype that I hear, but is very pervasive, is that Prescott is a "hippie school" because all the students here are supposedly hippies.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Students at Prescott College are very aware of political, social, and environemental activism within their communities. Becuase the school is so small, students get to know each other very well and there is a strong sense of community throughout campus. Campus events are not uncommon--usually there is anywhere from 2-7 events per week!!! Students are very aware of happenings in their communities as well. Prescott College has close ties with a local activist hub called "The Catalyst Infoshop" which produces a "Freeskool" calender each month with a detailing of free classes, meetings, and social events in the community(most of which are done by students and alumni). Community sports and events are popular among students as are pot-lucks.

What are the academics like at your school?
Prescott College emphasizes a style of learning called "experiential education", or "learning-by-doing". Rather than give lengthy lectures about a specific topic or area of study, instructors encourage students to participate in group disussions and do hands-on work in the field. Prescott College believes it is especially important to graduate students who will be successful, competent, and well-practiced in their field of study. The school finds that these types of teaching ethics promote self-direction and ecological literacy. Students here are expected to think critically and ethically, participating in class and creating unique, individualized learning experiences. Class sizes are small in order to enable students to work in the field and create individual and personalized learning contracts with their instructors. Students are encouraged to create lasting relationships with their faculty and advisors, who often become lifelong mentors, friends, and colleagues of their students. Students at PC are very driven in their areas of study. Though the school does offer a handful of pre-structured competances(PC-lingo for "majors"), most students choose to create unique degree plans for themselves--rarely do two students take the same approach to creating a major. Many classes are interdisciplinary and when combined with classes in other fields can create individualized competences unique to the student. Prescott College students are required to prove their competence in their field by completing a senior project before they can graduate. Often times, these are individual research projects, internships, or independant studies that have students actually working in their field. By the time students graduate, they have created a unique portfolio of experiences, both in the classroom and the field(and usually a resume) that helps them create a fascinating career in their area of study. Students have the option to recieve grades in addition to a written evaluation at the close of each class. These evaluations prove very hepful because they give a detailed description of the student's achievements, skills, and progress in each class they take at Prescott College--kind of like an individualized letter of reccomendation for each new class the student is involved in. Transcripts at Prescott College are detailed and often helpful for students pursing additional degrees and careers once they graduate.

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
Depending on your definition of what the word "hippie" means...this can be both true and false. When I picture hippies, I see a group of free-thinking individuals who promote personal expression and individuality. I imagine a community of socially aware, actve, and environmentally concious individuals who focus on being part of a global and local community. This is the type of "hippie" that attends Prescott College. We are not a community of lazy, burned-out, drug-children. Prescott College is a very self-directed and experiential kind of school that requires its students to be responsible in order to succeed. You can not be drugged out all the time and get things done here. No one is going to hold your hand here, so success really depends on you.
