Tuskegee University holds a distinguished place in the landscape of American higher education, particularly for its historical significance and contributions to the African American community. Founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee University has been a beacon of educational excellence and empowerment for African Americans, especially during times when access to quality education for black students was severely restricted. One of the university's most notable achievements is its emphasis on practical education and vocational training, reflecting Booker T. Washington's philosophy that education should be directly applicable to the students' lives and careers. This approach has enabled generations of students to acquire not only academic knowledge but also practical skills that have facilitated their economic independence and professional success. Tuskegee's contributions to science and technology are particularly noteworthy. The Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces, trained at the university, breaking racial barriers and demonstrating excellence in aviation. Additionally, the university has been instrumental in agricultural research and innovation, largely through the work of George Washington Carver, who conducted pioneering research at Tuskegee that transformed agricultural practices in the South. Moreover, Tuskegee University has a strong commitment to community service and leadership development. Its programs are designed to cultivate not only academic and professional skills but also a sense of social responsibility and ethical leadership. This commitment is evident in the university's emphasis on character development and its support for initiatives that promote social justice and community engagement. The university's campus is a National Historic Site, underscoring its importance in American history. The preservation of its heritage and the ongoing dedication to its founding principles make Tuskegee University a unique and invaluable institution. It continues to play a vital role in advancing educational opportunities for African Americans and contributing to the broader discourse on race, equality, and social justice in the United States. In summary, Tuskegee University is an institution that has not only provided quality education and fostered innovation but has also played a crucial role in the fight for civil rights and equality. Its legacy and ongoing mission make it a cornerstone of American education and a symbol of progress and resilience.

Tuskegee U is a great school academically. We need better housing and we need better food. We are in the middle of nowhere but we make do. I love my school. I wouldn’t want to attend another HBCU at all. Tuskegee faculty members can do a better job at teaching but academics is a big deal on campus. You have to very smart and participate regularly.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

College is an experience like no other. It is your time in life to make a statement about not only who you are but who you want to become. It is a once in a life time chance, so make every moment last. With that being said, it is important to remember why you are there. The college you chose after a careful elimination process is the one you will be with for the next four or maybe five years and graduate with a Chemical Engineering degree. You will encounter people and situations that you have never experienced before. The only advice I can give is to be smart, and think twice about every move you make. The parties and the boys will always be there but the deadline for that term paper is Monday! No one said that school would be easy but it will be fun. New doors will open up to you and you need to know which ones to close and which ones to embrace the journey that lies ahead. More than anything always put your best foot forward because it is a great feeling of accomplishment to see your hard work pay off.
