Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 125 awards are disbursed annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts or the direct dependent or spouse of a U.S armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts.
  2. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
  3. Must be enrolled full-time or part-time.
  4. Must attend an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution.
  5. Must be a resident of Maryland.
  6. This award is for U.S students.

Additional Information: The Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their sons, daughters, or spouses who are current high school seniors, and full-time and part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution. Awards are made annually, with renewal applicants given first priority. Eligible veterans will be given priority over dependent children or spouses. Within priority groups, applicants will be ranked according to application complete date.

Award Amount: Up to $10,655 annually. Awards may be held for up to five years of full-time enrollment or eight years of part-time enrollment providing the student maintains a GPA of 2.5 or higher and files the FAFSA by March 1 each year. Award amounts are tentative and may be adjusted based on verification of Veterans Educational Benefits received under Chapter 33/Post 9/11 GI Bill. The total dollar amount of all State awards, may not exceed the cost of attendance as determined by the school's financial aid office or $19,000, whichever is less.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,375.

8pplications are available from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) website. Students must also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and in college financial aid offices. In addition to a completed application, students must also submit a birth certificate showing the names of both parents (if a son or daughter of a veteran), a marriage certificate (if a spouse of a veteran), a copy of current official military orders; documentation of service in Afghanistan/Iraq (United States Armed Forces - Active Duty), or a copy of Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214). Application and all required materials must be complete and submitted by the deadline date.
