In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a resident of Oregon.
  2. Must be an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must be majoring in and planning to pursue a career in welding or a related field.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  5. This award is for U.S. students.

Description: This scholarship is available for undergraduate residents of Oregon who are pursuing higher education in preparation for a career in welding or a related metalworking field.

Additional Information: This scholarship is sponsored by Donald and the late Jean Cleveland in memory of their parents John and Tressie Barrong and Claude and Ruth Cleveland. It is administered by the Willamette Valley Section of the American Welding Society, and it will be awarded annually to an Oregon student who is pursuing higher education in welding or a related metalworking field.

Award Amount: $1,250 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,250.

Applications are available online on the American Welding Society (AWS) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit the following: two letters of reference with one letter of reference indicating previous hands-on welding experience; a personal statement; original official transcript(s) sent directly from the college or university (if applying for more than one scholarship, only one transcript must be an original official transcript); verification of enrollment; an essay as specified on the application; and a statement of unmet financial need. Students must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
