Cost of College in Oklahoma

Panoramic view of a bustling cityscape with skyscrapers at sunset.

Before diving into the scholarships, let’s take a look at the cost of attending college in Oklahoma. For the 2024-2025 academic year, in-state tuition and fees at the University of Oklahoma (OU) are approximately $9,886 per year, while out-of-state students can expect to pay about $28,000. Oklahoma State University (OSU) charges in-state students around $9,243 annually, while out-of-state students pay close to $25,000.

For those attending private universities such as the University of Tulsa, tuition can reach upwards of $50,000 per year. Despite these costs, a variety of scholarships, grants, and financial aid programs exist to help Oklahoma students afford going to college.

Oklahoma State-Funded Scholarships and Grants

Oklahoma offers several state-funded scholarships and grants to help students pursue higher education. Most of these programs require completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility.

Oklahoma’s Promise

One of Oklahoma’s most prominent scholarship programs is Oklahoma’s Promise. This program covers tuition costs for qualifying students attending public colleges and universities in Oklahoma. To be eligible, students must enroll in the program during 8th, 9th, or 10th grade and meet income and academic requirements. Oklahoma’s Promise covers tuition and fees at public colleges and universities in Oklahoma, partial tuition at private institutions in the state, and a portion of tuition at public technology centers.

Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant (OTAG)

The Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant (OTAG) is a need-based grant for Oklahoma residents attending in-state colleges or universities. The award amount varies based on financial need and availability of funds, but eligible students can receive up to $3,000 per academic year. The specific award amount will depend on family income as well as the college or university you attend.

Oklahoma Tuition Equalization Grant (OTEG)

The Oklahoma Tuition Equalization Grant (OTEG) is a need-based grant for Oklahoma residents attending eligible in-state colleges or universities. Maximum OTEG awards are $2,000 per academic year. To qualify for OTEG, recipients must have adjusted family incomes of $50,000 or less.

Oklahoma Future Teacher Scholarship and Incentive to Teach Program

The Oklahoma Future Teacher Scholarship and Incentive to Teach Program, also known as “Inspired to Teach” provides up to $25,500 (cumulative award maximum). Eligible students must enroll in an accredited Oklahoma teacher education program, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and agree to teach in an Oklahoma public school for five years. The program provides annual scholarships during college and additional payments for each year of teaching after graduation. Participants must start teaching within 13 months of earning their teacher certification.

Oklahoma Academic Scholars Program

The Oklahoma Academic Scholars Program provides scholarships to high-achieving Oklahoma students attending Oklahoma colleges or universities. Automatic qualification is based on National Merit Scholarship status or high ACT/SAT scores, while institutional nominations are also possible. Scholarships cover up to eight semesters, with annual awards ranging from $3,000 to $6,500 depending on the institution you attend. Recipients must maintain full-time enrollment and a 3.25 GPA. Additional tuition waivers are available for award recipients who are attending an Oklahoma public university.

Federal Grants for Oklahoma Students

In addition to state-funded grants and scholarships, Oklahoma students can apply for federal financial aid, including the Pell Grant, which offers up to $7,395 per year for low-income students in the 2024-2025 academic year. The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) offers additional funding for students with exceptional financial need, with awards ranging from $100 to $4,000 annually.

Institutional Scholarships at Oklahoma Colleges and Universities

Many Oklahoma colleges and universities offer institutional scholarships to help students pay for their education. These scholarships are often based on merit, financial need, or a combination of both.

University of Oklahoma (OU) National Merit Semi-Finalist Scholarship

OU offers a competitive scholarship that provides full tuition, housing stipends, and additional funding for National Merit Semi-Finalists. This scholarship covers up to five years of undergraduate study, making it an attractive option for high-achieving students. This scholarship program is open to both Oklahoma residents and nonresidents.

Oklahoma State University (OSU) University Awards

OSU offers several merit-based scholarships, including the President’s Distinguished Scholarship, which provides awards for partial tuition and fees for four years to high-achieving students. OSU also offers the Out-of-State Achievement Award for non-resident students who demonstrate academic excellence.

University of Tulsa Presidential Scholarship

The Presidential Scholarship at the University of Tulsa is a prestigious award covering up to full tuition for four years. This merit-based scholarship is available to top students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.

Private Scholarships for Oklahoma Students

In addition to state-funded and institutional scholarships, many private scholarships are available to Oklahoma students. These awards are typically sponsored by local businesses, foundations, and nonprofit organizations.

Oklahoma City Community Foundation (OCCF) Scholarships

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation administers a variety of scholarships for Oklahoma students. These scholarships offer cumulative awards ranging from $2,000 to over $20,000 and are available to students in a variety of disciplines, including healthcare, engineering, and the arts. Scholarships are available to traditional undergraduate, graduate, and adult learner students.

Cherokee Nation Scholarship Program

Members of the Cherokee Nation may be eligible for scholarships through the tribe’s Education Services Department. These scholarships support both undergraduate and graduate students and vary in amount depending on financial need and academic performance.

Tinker Federal Credit Union Scholarship

The Tinker Federal Credit Union Scholarship awards up to $7,500 to Oklahoma students who are members of the credit union. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement and community involvement.

Scholarships for Adult Learners in Oklahoma

Oklahoma offers financial support for adult learners and non-traditional students returning to college after a break.

Oklahoma Reach Higher Finish Line Scholarship

The Oklahoma Finish Line Scholarship program provides up to $5,000 for earning an associate’s degree and $7,000 for eligible Oklahoma students to finish bachelor’s degrees, with a minimum award of $500 per semester. Awards depend on available funding and may vary each year. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, and materials and can be combined with other financial aid, subject to review. Recipients must attend an eligible institution and make satisfactory academic progress to continue receiving funds.

Tips for Securing Oklahoma Scholarships

Stately capitol building with majestic dome and columns under a blue sky.

Securing scholarships and grants in Oklahoma requires preparation and attention to detail. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

  • Complete the FAFSA early: Most state-funded and institutional grants and scholarships require FAFSA submission to determine eligibility.

  • Stay organized: Make sure and keep track of application deadlines, required documents, and eligibility criteria.

  • Write a compelling personal statement: Highlight your achievements, goals, and why you deserve a scholarship.

  • Search for local scholarships: Many Oklahoma businesses, community groups, houses or worship, and organizations offer scholarships that may not be widely advertised.

  • Request strong letters of recommendation: Choose individuals who can speak to your strengths and ask for recommendations early since your peers will likely also be asking for letters.
