Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a legal resident of West Virginia.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in both the core courses and in the student's overall grade point average. The core requirements are: English/language arts (four credits), mathematics (three credits), social sciences (four credits), and natural sciences (three credits).
  4. Must have a composite ACT score of 22 or higher or a combined SAT score of 1020 or higher. Students must have a minimum ACT sub-score of 20 in all subject areas or a minimum score of 490 on the verbal section and a 480 on the math section of the SAT.
  5. Must plan to enroll full time.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must plan to attend an eligible West Virginia public or private college or university.
  8. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  9. Must complete high school graduation requirements at a West Virginia public or private high school.

Description: This award is available for West Virginia high school seniors who are planning to attend an eligible West Virginia public or private college or university. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and have a composite ACT score of 22 or higher or a combined SAT score of 1020 or higher.

Additional Information: The PROMISE Scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program for West Virginia residents. Students who achieve certain academic goals are eligible to receive funds to help pay for college.

Award Amount: Up to $4,750 to cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at public or independent institutions in West Virginia. Awards are renewable for up to three additional years provided the student maintains satisfactory academic progress and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per year. The amount of a PROMISE Scholarship award in combination with aid from all other sources of financial aid cannot exceed the student's cost of attendance.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,699.

*Please note: Applications will be available online on the College Foundation of West Virginia (CFWV) website on Oct. 1. Students must submit the online PROMISE application by March 1. Students may use their eighth semester (typically the spring semester of their senior year) grades to achieve PROMISE eligibility, but must submit the application by this date. Students must also complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for this scholarship. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices.
