Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Generally, there are 150 to 175 scholarships awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized Indian tribe.
  3. Must be a resident of North Dakota.
  4. Must have been accepted for admission at an institution of higher learning or state career and technical education program within North Dakota.
  5. Must enroll as a full-time student or be a part-time student who will complete his/her degree requirements within one semester. Full-time enrollment is generally considered 12 semester hours for undergraduate students and 9 semester hours for graduate students, or their equivalents for quarter or clock hour enrollments.
  6. Students who qualify for a merit-based award must be the valedictorian of their high school graduating class (this criterion may be used only for the academic year immediately following high school graduation) OR have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students who qualify for a need-based award must demonstrate financial need based on the needs analysis and FAFSA.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  8. Must be an incoming or current undergraduate or graduate student.
  9. Must demonstrate probable and continuing success as a student by having a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Description: This award is for North Dakota students who are enrolled in a federally recognized Indian tribe and attend a North Dakota institution of higher education to pursue an undergraduate or graduate program. Students who qualify for the merit-based award must be the valedictorian of their high school graduating class or have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher; students who qualify for the need-based award must demonstrate financial need and have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Additional Information: Each year, award priority will be given to valedictorians, who are considered for the merit-based scholarship in the academic year directly following high school graduation, then to merit-based applicants, then to need-based applicants. Grade point averages will be ranked from highest to lowest for merit-based applicants. Grade point averages will not be rounded up. Demonstrated financial need will be ranked from highest need to lowest need for need-based applicants. Financial need will be determined based on the needs analysis provided by the financial aid office. The FAFSA is required to determine need. Any eligible applicant who is not offered an award but whose application was received by the deadline will be placed on a wait list for funds which may become available throughout the academic year. Applications received after July 15 will be considered only if all eligible applicants meeting the deadline are awarded and if funds remain. Late applications will be considered in date order received based on the priority funding selection Students participating in internships, student teaching, teaching assistance, or cooperative education programs may be eligible for a scholarship award only if participation in that program is required for the degree and only if tuition must be paid for the credits earned.

Award Amount: Award amount ranges from $800 to $2,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years providing the student maintains continuous full-time enrollment with a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,116.

Applications are available from the North Dakota University System (NDUS) website or by request. As part of the application, the student must submit the following materials: verification of tribal enrollment (not required if he/she previously received award); his/her most recent transcript showing cumulative grade point average (unofficial acceptable); and a 'Need Analysis' form (must be completed by his/her institution's financial aid office). All students must also file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Applications must be mailed or faxed to NDUS using the contact information provided. Applications must be received by the deadline date. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered to have met the deadline and will be considered only if funding remains.
