Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of eligible students and available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must score in the Advanced category in either the mathematics or the English language arts section of the grade 10 MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) test and score in the Proficient or Advanced category on the second subject (mathematics or English language arts). Students must also have a combined MCAS score on these assessments that ranks in the top 25 percent in their school district.
  2. Must be a permanent Massachusetts resident.
  3. Must be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  4. Must plan to enroll full time.
  5. Must attend a Massachusetts public college or university to pursue a first bachelor's degree.
  6. Must be a high school senior at time of FAFSA submission.
  7. This award is for U.S. students.
  8. Must be enrolled in a Massachusetts high school.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to Massachusetts high school students who are enrolled or plan to enroll in a public Massachusetts college or university. Students must have earned a Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) grade 10 test score that ranks in the top 25 percent in their school district.

Application requirements for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: The purposes of the Adams Scholarship are to: reward and inspire student achievement; help attract more high-performing students to Massachusetts public higher education; and provide families of college-bound students with financial assistance. All eligible students must: not be in default with applicable law regarding any federal or state student education loans for attendance at any institution or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received.

Award Amount: The award is in the form of a tuition waiver for state-supported undergraduate courses. Individual student awards shall be no more than the resident undergraduate tuition rate at the participating institution. The tuition waiver can be used for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for continued eligibility.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,173.

Scholarship information is available online on the Massachusetts Office of Student Financial Assistance (MOSFA) website. To be considered for this scholarship, the student must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. There is no other application process required for this scholarship. Eligible students will be notified in the fall of their senior year of high school. Please note: The Massachusetts state priority deadline for submission of the FAFSA is midnight CT on May 1 each year.
