Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 15,000 awards disbursed annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  4. Must attend a college or university in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, or the District of Columbia.
  5. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
  6. Must enroll part-time or full-time basis.
  7. Must demonstrate financial need.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to Maine resident undergraduate students who are enrolled at an eligible college or university. The student must demonstrate financial need and have an EFC of $3,000 or less.

Additional Information: The State of Maine Grant program is a need-based program that provides grants to undergraduate students. Financial need is determined based on the student's expected family contribution (EFC). The EFC is calculated by the U.S. Department of Education using information provided on the FAFSA and must not exceed the maximum EFC set in any given year. The maximum EFC for the 2015-2016 academic year is $4,000. The college/university will determine grant eligibility based upon enrollment status and EFC.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000 annually, renewable. Students who are enrolled less than full-time may be eligible for a pro-rated amount.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

To apply, interested students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the document that FAME utilizes in calculating the student's state grant eligibility. The FAFSA must be received by the Federal Processor for state scholarship/grant consideration after January 1 but on or before May 1 to be considered for the award year. In addition to a complete application, each participating college or university may require students to submit additional forms or supplemental information before scholarship eligibility can be determined. Students should contact his/her institution for additional details.
