Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies annually. Approximately three awards were provided last year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must graduate from an Arizona High School. Preference will be given to students who reside in Verde Valley or Northern Arizona.
  2. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  3. Must intend to become a K-12 teacher and/or education major.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  5. This award is for U.S. students.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors in Verde Valley and Northern Arizona who are planning to major in education.

Additional Information: This award is provided in memory of Javus B. Fortmann and in honor of her education career and commitment to teaching & education administration. Funds are provided annually to a student in the state who also exemplifies this educational calling. Additional preference will be given to students in the Verde Valley area of Arizona. The Arizona Community Foundation provides scholarships for high school seniors and current college students throughout Arizona. Selection for awards is based primarily on academic records, financial need (as demonstrated by the FAFSA paperwork), and the quality of other submission items such as essays and recommendation letters.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Previous recipients are eligible to re-apply and may receive priority for future awards.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Arizona Community Foundation website. To apply, the applicant must register with the foundation. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation, one from his/her guidance counselor and one from a high school academic teacher, attesting to his/her academic strengths and determination to succeed at the university; a high school transcript through the seventh semester; a 500- to 700-word essay addressing the topic listed on the application; typed personal statements; verification of SAT and/or ACT test scores; and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form(FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
