Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. All eligible students will be considered. In the the most recent for which data is available, there were 20 scholarships awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Alabama.
  3. Must have a parent who is blind.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior or older and apply within two years of high school graduation.
  5. Must plan to attend an Alabama state-supported institution of higher learning.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must have a family income of equal to or less than 1.3 times the current poverty income level (as determined by federal poverty guidelines).
  8. Must be 23 years of age or younger.

Description: This award is for available to Alabama students who are from families in which the head of the family is blind and whose family income is insufficient to provide educational benefits for attendance at an Alabama postsecondary institution. Students must apply within two years of high school graduation.

Application requirements for the Alabama Scholarship for Dependents of Blind Parents are:

Additional Information: The purpose of the Alabama Scholarship for Dependents of Blind Parents is to cover instructional fees and tuition at an Alabama state institution of higher learning for children from families in which the head of the family is blind and whose family income is insufficient to provide educational benefits. Family income must not be greater than 1.3 times the current poverty income level, as determined by federal poverty guidelines based upon the number of family members. Students must be initiated into the program within two years after high school graduation, but in no case after the 23rd birthday and be completed within five years after its initiation, excluding any delays caused by military service. Awards may not extend beyond the student's 30th birthday.

Award Amount: This award covers tuition, fees, and the cost of textbooks at an eligible institution. Awards are renewable for up to a total of four academic years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Scholarship applications may be obtained by contacting Debra Culver of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a blindness certification form, completed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist; a copy of the U. S. individual income tax return(s) or other documentation that indicates the family's gross/total income for the prior year; and a completed "Authorization for Use, Disclosure, and/or Release of Information" form. Please note: One section of the application must be completed by the institution of higher learning that the student plans to attend. The application and all attachments (including the section submitted by the institution of higher learning) must be received by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services by June 30 to be considered for the entire academic year or be received by Sept. 30 to be considered for the spring semester only.
